How to reach Aizawl by air

Lengpui Airport (AJL) is about 32 to 37 km north of the city, roughly an hour by road. It has flights to Guwahati, Kolkata, Delhi and a few regional cities. It has a tabletop runway; weather can cause delays.

How to reach Aizawl by train

Sairang (SANG), opened in September 2025, is about 15 to 20 km from Aizawl and is the terminus of the new Bairabi-Sairang line. Services have run to Guwahati, Kolkata, Silchar and Delhi (Anand Vihar); check current trains. Silchar in Assam is the older railhead.

How to reach Aizawl by road

The national highway from Silchar in Assam, long known as NH 54, is the main road link, with a drive of about 180 km that can take over five hours. Mountain roads are slow and prone to landslides in the monsoon; add a buffer.

Getting around Aizawl

Local taxis and shared jeeps cover the city. For day trips to Reiek, Hmuifang or Thenzawl, hire a car with a driver. Streets are steep, so use a car rather than walking between neighbourhoods.

For parents and senior travellers

Easy transfers to and in Aizawl

  • Choose a hotel with a lift and road-level entrance. Aizawl's streets are steep, and many lanes are staircases.
  • Hire a car for the full day when you head out of town; shared jeeps are cheap but cramped on winding roads.
  • Carry a light jacket even in sunny months; ridge winds and winter mornings feel cold at this altitude.
  • Sundays are very quiet: most restaurants and shops close, so carry snacks and stock up on Saturday.
  • Add buffer time to every road trip; landslides and slow traffic can lengthen drives, especially from May to September.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
