Before you go

Aizawl with elderly parents: what to know

  • Choose a hotel with a lift and road-level entrance. Aizawl's streets are steep, and many lanes are staircases.
  • Hire a car for the full day when you head out of town; shared jeeps are cheap but cramped on winding roads.
  • Plan hills and viewpoints for mornings, when mist clears and the air is cooler, and rest in the afternoon.
  • Carry a light jacket even in sunny months; ridge winds and winter mornings feel cold at this altitude.
  • Sundays are very quiet: most restaurants and shops close, so carry snacks and stock up on Saturday.
  • Add buffer time to every road trip; landslides and slow traffic can lengthen drives, especially from May to September.

Easiest first

Places in Aizawl sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (4)

  • Durtlang Hills (Places to visit · 30 to 60 minutes) — The viewpoints are reached by car and need little walking, though paths are uneven. Seating is limited. Cloud and mist can hide the view, especially in the monsoon.
  • Luangmual Handicrafts Centre (Shopping · About 1 hour) — The centre is reached by car and is mostly level inside. The drive is about 30 minutes through steep streets. Seating may be limited.
  • Salvation Army Temple (Places of worship · About 30 minutes) — The area is steep, but the church is easy to reach by taxi. Inside, seating is available in the sanctuary during open hours. Be ready for steps at the entrance.
  • Tam Dil (Places to visit · Full day or overnight) — The lake paths and resort grounds are mostly gentle, but the drive is long and winding. Boating involves boarding a small boat, which some older visitors find difficult.

Some walking — plan a break (6)

  • Aizawl Zoological Park (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours) — The zoo is built on a slope with paths that rise and fall. Seating is available in places, but older visitors may want a short loop only. Ask at the gate whether a vehicle or a shorter route is possible.
  • Hmuifang (Places to visit · Full day or overnight) — The road is long and winding, and the resort is on a hillside with steps. Cold weather is likely, so carry layers.
  • Mizoram State Museum (Culture and craft · About 1.5 hours) — The museum is on a hill with several floors, so expect stairs between galleries; check whether a lift is working. Seating is limited. It is a good rainy-day option and cool inside. Taxis can drop at the entrance.
  • Reiek Tlang and Heritage Village (Places to visit · Half day (4 to 5 hours return)) — The road is narrow and winding, which some find tiring. The heritage village is mostly level with some steps. The summit walk is steep; older visitors may enjoy the village and viewpoints at lower level instead.
  • Solomon's Temple (Places of worship · About 1 hour) — The compound is reached by car and has a large courtyard and a park-like setting. Inside the main hall there are steps and long distances to walk between doors. Seating is available in the hall during open hours. Wet weather makes the paving slippery.
  • Thenzawl and Vantawng Falls (Places to visit · Full day or overnight) — The drive is long and winding. At the falls, a viewing tower gives access without a trek, but there are stairs. In Thenzawl, craft shops are mostly at ground level.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)

  • Bara Bazar (Shopping · About 2 hours) — The lanes are steep, crowded and often stepped. There is little seating. Older visitors may prefer a short taxi hop to a single stretch and a quick return rather than a long wander.
  • Tawi Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Full day from Aizawl, or an overnight if you want time on foot) — Terrain is steep, with elevations from about 400 m to 1,300 m, and no published seating, toilets or paved paths. The long hill drive is tiring. Most older travellers would be better served by Tam Dil or Hmuifang, which are much closer to Aizawl.

Practical tips for Aizawl

  • Inner Line Permit. Indian visitors from outside Mizoram need an ILP. A temporary permit can be applied for online on the state portal (ilp.mizoram.gov.in) before travel, and temporary permits have also been issued at Lengpui Airport and entry points. Carry a photo ID and a printout. Rules for foreign nationals differ, so confirm with Mizoram Tourism before booking.
  • Sundays. Mizoram is predominantly Christian and Sunday is a day of church and rest. Most shops and restaurants close, and some sights limit access. Plan meals at your hotel and keep Sunday for a relaxed drive or rest.
  • Hills and stairs. Aizawl sits on a steep ridge, and many lanes are long staircases. Ask hotels about road-level access and lifts, and use taxis rather than walking between neighbourhoods.
  • Rain and landslides. From May to September, heavy rain can cause landslides and road closures. If you must travel then, allow extra days and avoid long drives after dark.
  • Dress and temperature. Evenings are cool at about 1,130 metres, and winter mornings can be cold. Carry a light jacket year-round, and dress modestly for churches.
  • Money and connectivity. Carry some cash for small shops and taxis, though cards and UPI work in larger places. Mobile coverage is generally good in the city but patchy on the hill roads.
  • Photography. Photography is generally fine at viewpoints and in markets, but ask before photographing people and do not photograph during services.
  • Getting around. Local taxis and shared jeeps are the main transport. For day trips, hire a car with a driver and agree the route and hours in advance.
