Why it matters
Why Thenzawl and Vantawng Falls is worth your time
Thenzawl matters because weaving is central to Mizo identity, and this is where it happens at scale. After 1947, the town became an important centre for traditional puan weaving, and by the 1980s it was a major centre for frame-loom weaving that contributes noticeably to the state economy.
Vantawng Falls adds a landscape highlight. At about 230 metres, it is Mizoram's highest uninterrupted waterfall, and is named after a legendary swimmer. Together, the two give you craft and nature in a single, long but rewarding day, and they show Mizoram beyond the capital.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Leave early and treat the drive as part of the day. Thenzawl is the main handloom centre, and the weaving shops are the reason to stop: Mizo puan cloth is woven here, including on frame looms, and you may be able to see weavers at work. Ask about patterns and buy only what you like.
After lunch, drive about 5 km south to Vantawng Falls, the highest uninterrupted waterfall in Mizoram at about 230 metres. A viewing tower has been built because the surrounding terrain is steep and densely forested. Go in the dry season for a clearer view; in the monsoon the fall is bigger but the views can be hidden in cloud.
If you have extra time, see the Thenzawl Deer Park or the golf course. Do not try to return in the dark, and consider staying a night at a tourist lodge in Thenzawl.
