Why it matters
Why Balapur Fort is worth your time
Balapur Fort is one of the better preserved Mughal-era forts in Berar. Its multiple gateways and high walls show a defensive design intended for firing from inside as well as holding off attack.
The place also ties together the region's layers: a local goddess temple that named the town, Mughal construction begun under Aurangzeb's son, and a chhatri linked to Jaipur's Rajput generals who served the Mughals in the Deccan.

How to experience it
Balapur sits on the road west of Akola, and the fort stands on raised ground between two rivers. Start with the approach: the walls are very high, with bastions at intervals, and three gateways are set one within another so that attackers had to pass each in turn.
Inside, walk the open ground and look for the chhatri, an umbrella-shaped canopy tied by tradition to Raja Man Singh I and built by Mirza Raja Jai Singh. It is about 25 feet square and 33 feet tall. A flood damaged its foundations, and repairs were paid for with Rs 3,000 sent from Jaipur. Below the fort on the south side stands the Bala Devi temple, from which the town takes its name.
Not every part is accessible, since offices occupy sections of the fort. Ask a local guide or official which areas you can enter. Carry water and allow time for the temple.
