Akola is a city in the Berar part of Vidarbha, Maharashtra, on the Morna River, and is nicknamed the Cotton City. It is a road and rail junction and an educational centre, not a conventional tourist town. The appeal is modest and local: a handful of Mughal-era forts, an old Shiva temple and uncrowded wildlife areas within a day's drive.

The old city holds Akola Fort, also called Asadgad, whose gates and inscriptions date to its rebuilding in 1697, and the Raj Rajeshwar temple beside it, said to be the oldest Mahadev temple in the city. Outside town are Balapur Fort, a well-kept Mughal fort between two rivers, and Narnala, a large hill-fort complex inside Melghat Tiger Reserve.

For nature, Katepurna Wildlife Sanctuary, about 30 km from Akola, protects dry forest around a reservoir and the shy four-horned antelope. Karanja Sohol Blackbuck Sanctuary, across the district line in Washim, protects grassland and winter waterfowl.

Akola works best as a base for a short heritage and wildlife trip. Summers are very hot, so plan for the cooler months, and use a hired car for the forts and sanctuaries, since public transport thins quickly.

What and where to eat in Akola.

Food to try in Akola

Food and restaurants

Akola's food is Vidarbha home cooking: jowar and wheat rotis, spicy saoji-style curries and simple vegetarian thalis, alongside Muslim-influenced snacks in the older quarters. Menus and named restaurants change, so ask your hotel for current recommendations.

Carry water and snacks on day trips, since the sanctuaries and forts have no food stalls. Tea stalls and snack carts near the station and bus stand are the easy option for a quick bite.

Markets, makers and what to take home.

Shopping in Akola

Shopping

Akola is not a souvenir town. Expect everyday markets in the old city; the cotton trade is the main industry, so look for cotton cloth from established shops and ask for a proper bill. For handicrafts, larger cities such as Nagpur have better choice.

Choose without overthinking

Which Akola experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Balapur Fort or Narnala Fort?

Balapur is closer, easier and good for a half day. Narnala is bigger and wilder but needs a full day, a car and good stamina.

Katepurna or Karanja Sohol?

Katepurna is nearer and offers forest and reservoir birds; Karanja Sohol is a longer trip for open grassland and blackbuck.

Akola Fort or Raj Rajeshwar first?

They stand together; start with the temple in the morning for darshan, then walk to the fort.
