Before you go
Akola with elderly parents: what to know
- Visit between November and February; April and May are punishing.
- Choose Balapur and the old city over Narnala if stamina is limited.
- Hire a car with a driver for forts and sanctuaries.
- Carry water and snacks; sanctuaries have minimal facilities.
- Go early at the forts, where there is little shade.
Easiest first
Places in Akola sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (3)
- Akola Fort (Asadgad) (Places to visit · About 1 hour) — The fort is in the city, with level approaches, but surfaces are uneven, shade is limited and there are few places to sit. A car or auto to the gate keeps the effort low.
- Karanja Sohol Blackbuck Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half a day plus the drive) — Viewing is mostly from a vehicle or short walks on level grassland. Facilities are limited, so carry water, and avoid the hot months.
- Raj Rajeshwar Temple (Places of worship · 45 minutes) — The temple is in the city and mostly level, with steps at thresholds and little seating. Shravan Mondays and festival days are crowded; an ordinary weekday morning is easier.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Balapur Fort (Places to visit · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The fort has high walls and uneven ground, with limited seating and shade. Some paths are rough, but the main courtyards are reachable without long climbs. Go slowly in the heat.
- Katepurna Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half a day) — Tracks are unmade and facilities are minimal. Heat in April to June can be severe, so older travellers should visit in the cooler months and keep walking to a minimum.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Narnala Fort (Places to visit · 3 to 5 hours) — The complex is large with long walks on uneven stone and little shade. Older travellers should see the main gate and nearby areas only, and avoid hot months.

- Getting around. Autos suit the city. For Balapur, Narnala and the sanctuaries, hire a car with a driver.
- Flights. Akola's airport has no public services, so plan arrival by train or road, or via Nagpur.
- Forest rules. Entry fees and permits for the sanctuaries and Narnala are not published; confirm with the forest office.
- Water and food. Carry drinking water and snacks; the forts and sanctuaries have no shops.
- Temple etiquette. Dress modestly and remove footwear at Raj Rajeshwar and Bala Devi temples.
