The short answer

Best areas to stay in Alibaug

  1. 01

Beachfront (near Kolaba Fort and the main beach)

Best for: Travellers who want the quintessential Alibaug experience: sunset views, immediate beach access, and the town's main activity nearby

Hotels here range from simple guesthouses to mid-range resorts. Expect some noise from the town and occasional fishery activity. Check water quality and cleanliness of the specific beach stretch before choosing. Choose a hotel with a back-up water supply as shortages can occur in hot months.

  2. 02

Town bazaar and near Jagdish Temple

Best for: Budget-conscious travellers and families who want walking access to shops, food, and temples

The heart of Alibaug where locals live and work. Noisier and busier than the beachfront, but more affordable and authentic. Good for exploring the actual town rather than just sunbathing.

  3. 03

North beach (quieter stretches beyond the main town)

Best for: Couples, seniors seeking calm, and nature-lovers wanting fewer crowds

Small guesthouses and homestays offer quieter mornings and more open beach. Slightly further from restaurants and shops, but peaceful. Best for those with their own transport or patience with auto-rickshaw rides.

  4. 04

Nearby villages (Revdanda, Mandwa, Pen area)

Best for: Longer stays, those seeking rural Konkan life, and heritage enthusiasts

Small towns within 20–40 kilometres have farms, stepwells, and fewer tourists. Good as a secondary base if you want to explore beyond the beach. Requires a car for real comfort.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

For parents and senior travellers

Comfort notes for Alibaug

  • Stay near the beach or bazaar to avoid long auto rides. Distances in Alibaug are short, but taxis can be sporadic.
  • Kolaba Fort has uneven ramparts and steps. Allow 2–3 hours, wear sturdy shoes, and bring water. If stairs are a concern, skip the upper levels and enjoy the lower grounds and beach approach.
  • Eat seafood with confidence—it is fresh—but ask for less spice if you prefer milder curries. Stick to bottled or filtered water.
  • Afternoons are very hot from March to May. Plan indoor time or rest at the hotel between 1 and 4 p.m., especially if travelling with older family members.

Questions about staying in Alibaug

Can I do a day trip from Mumbai instead of staying overnight?

Technically yes, but it feels rushed. The ferry takes 1–1.5 hours each way, and you lose time at either end. A 2-day trip is ideal; a day trip works only if you have your own car and skip the ferry.
