The short answer
Bhangarh Fort: what visitors should know first
Worth a long day if you like ruins and open landscapes. It is closer to Jaipur than Alwar, so check the route. Arrive in daylight and leave before sunset, as the ASI signboard bars entry between sunset and sunrise.
History and context
The story behind Bhangarh Fort
Bhangarh was established in 1573 by Bhagwant Das as a residence for his son Madho Singh. Jai Singh II annexed it in 1720. The town has been largely abandoned since the 1783 famine. The site has temples, including Gopinath, Someshwar, Hanuman and Ganesh, and five gates.

Why it matters
Why Bhangarh Fort is worth your time
Bhangarh is a rare surviving example of a planned 16th-century Rajput town, with a bazaar, temples, havelis and a palace within a fortified boundary. It gives a sense of how a small cadet branch built a capital, then lost it.
Its reputation as a haunted place comes from folklore about a curse. The ASI's sunset rule has fed that story, but the official reason given is safety around wild animals and ruins.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan to arrive in the morning and leave before late afternoon. The ASI sign at the gate bars entry between sunset and sunrise, so you do not want to be late. Walk in through the gate and follow the path past the temples towards the palace at the top.
Look at the temples near the entrance, including those of Gopinath and Someshwar, the old bazaar street, the havelis and the royal palace. The ruins are weathered, and you can climb to the upper levels for views toward the hills.
Do not look for ghosts. The ruins are best read as a planned town abandoned after hard times. Carry water and sun protection, and keep to the main paths.
