The short answer
Sariska Tiger Reserve: what visitors should know first
Go if wildlife is the reason for your trip, but book ahead and do not expect a sighting. Safaris are early starts in an open vehicle, so they suit fit travellers more than the very frail. October to March is the usual season, and the core is reported closed from July to September.
History and context
The story behind Sariska Tiger Reserve
The area was recognised as a wildlife reserve in 1955, a sanctuary in 1958, a Project Tiger reserve in 1978 and a national park in 1982. It covers about 1,203 sq km, including a core of 881 sq km and a buffer of 322 sq km.
Tigers were gone by 2005. Reintroduction began in 2008, and the reserve reported about 30 tigers in 2023.

Why it matters
Why Sariska Tiger Reserve is worth your time
Sariska is one of Rajasthan's best-known wildlife stories. The reserve lost its tigers entirely by 2005, then began a reintroduction in 2008 with animals moved from Ranthambhore, including the first aerial translocation by helicopter on 28 June 2008. By 2023 the population was reported at around 30.
For travellers, that history makes a sighting more meaningful and the reserve more fragile. The land also holds temples and forts, which is why a day here can combine wildlife and culture.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan Sariska first and fit the rest around it. Book a safari as early as you can, choose a morning or afternoon shift and decide whether you want the smaller jeep or the larger canter. Most visitors leave Alwar before dawn for a morning shift, so book a hotel near the gate if you do not want the 36 km drive in the dark.
On the track, expect a mix of dry deciduous forest, rocky ridges and grassland. Sambar and spotted deer, peafowl and monkeys are common, and sloth bear, leopard and tigers are present but not guaranteed. Be patient and quiet, and follow the driver and guide's instructions about staying seated.
Outside the safari, the reserve's cultural sites are Pandupol and Kankwari fort. Check the permitted days and vehicle rules for each before building them into the same day.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
