The short answer
Nunwan Base Camp: what visitors should know first
It matters only if you are on the Pahalgam route. Expect basic, crowded facilities and a rule-bound check-in, and confirm current arrangements with the Shrine Board, because the facilities and tariffs change every year.
History and context
The story behind Nunwan Base Camp
Nunwan has served as the base camp of the Pahalgam route in the modern Yatra, under the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board.
Volunteer organisations run free langars here during the Yatra.

Why it matters
Why Nunwan Base Camp is worth your time
Nunwan is where the Yatra becomes real. The scale of the operation, with registration counters, tents, langars, medical posts and security, shows how much structure supports the pilgrimage.
For older pilgrims, it is also the best place to get rest and a proper meal before the climb. A calm, warm night here, with your documents sorted and your layers packed, is a better investment than any piece of equipment you can buy on the way.

How to experience it
Nunwan sits on the road from Srinagar to Pahalgam, a few kilometres before the town. In the Yatra season it becomes a tented town, where pilgrims check in, collect or confirm their RFID cards and wait for their slot.
Stay organised. Keep your permit and health certificate together, eat at the langars run by volunteer organisations, and sleep early. The route starts early the next day, with a drive on to Chandanwari and the trek beyond.
If you prefer more comfort, many pilgrims stay in Pahalgam town and come to the camp only for the formalities. Check what the Board allows for your date.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Carry your permit and health certificate
