The short answer
Chandanwari: what visitors should know first
Visit it as a quiet stop outside the Yatra season, or as the start of the Pahalgam route during it. In July and August it is a busy checkpoint, so check the Board's rules and confirm road access with the local authorities.
History and context
The story behind Chandanwari
Chandanwari has been the starting point of the Pahalgam route in the modern Yatra, which is managed by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board.

Why it matters
Why Chandanwari is worth your time
For pilgrims, Chandanwari is where the walking begins, and according to the traditional story, where Shiva released the crescent moon from his hair before climbing to the cave. It is the practical start of the Pahalgam route, so it sets the mood of the Yatra.
For other visitors, it shows the Lidder valley at the point where roads give way to trails. It is also useful as a reality check: seeing the gate, the camps and the trail head helps travellers understand what the Yatra asks, and decide honestly whether it suits them.

How to experience it
Chandanwari is reached by a drive of about 16 km from Pahalgam, up the Lidder valley, where the road ends. Mini-buses and taxis serve the route, and in the Yatra season the Board and the police manage traffic. Outside the Yatra the place is quiet, with the river and the high ridges.
During the Yatra, the Access Control Gate here checks permits and RFID cards, and pilgrims begin the trek, on foot, by pony or by palki. The langar tents and medical posts around the gate are busy from early morning. Do not treat it as a casual photo stop during these weeks.
If you visit outside the season, treat it as a pleasant riverside break from Pahalgam, and check conditions first because snow and road closures affect access.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Check road access and weather before driving
- Carry your permit during the Yatra
- Avoid casual sightseeing in peak Yatra hours
- Dress warmly; the valley is cold
