The short answer
Sheshnag Lake: what visitors should know first
See it as part of the Pahalgam route, not a separate outing. It is reached only on foot or by pony, so it needs the same permit, health clearance and fitness as the Yatra, and the Board's rules apply.
History and context
The story behind Sheshnag Lake
The lake is fed by snowmelt and mountain streams, and drains into a stream that joins the Lidder River at Pahalgam. It freezes from about December to March.
Local accounts say cloudbursts carved the hollow that meltwater later filled, and the name refers to the king of the Nagas in Hindu tradition.

Why it matters
Why Sheshnag Lake is worth your time
Sheshnag is the scenic highlight of the Pahalgam route. For pilgrims, it is also where, in the traditional story, Shiva released his serpent, Sheshanaga, king of the Nagas, before moving on to the cave, and the lake takes its name from him.
Physically, it is the point where the journey changes character: the treeline is behind you, and the nights are properly cold. Many pilgrims find it the most memorable halt of the walk. It also marks the start of the hardest part of the route, so it is where good rest pays off.

How to experience it
Sheshnag is reached on the second stage of the Pahalgam route, after the steady climb from Chandanwari through Pissu Top. The lake lies below a ring of snow peaks, about 1.1 km long and 0.7 km wide, and the camp sits on its shore. Arrive in daylight if you can, because the colours change quickly in the evening.
Use the evening to rest, eat at a langar and keep warm. The air is thin and the night is cold, so keep layers within reach and drink water even if you do not feel thirsty. Do not wander far from the camp after dark.
In the morning, the route climbs steeply towards Mahagunas Pass. Start early and take it slowly. If you feel unwell, tell a medical post rather than pushing on.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Arrive in daylight if possible
- Keep layers and a headlamp ready
- Drink water and eat lightly
- Do not wander after dark
- Report symptoms to a medical post
