Area by area

Amarnath neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

Nunwan base camp area (Pahalgam route)

Best for: Pilgrims starting on the Pahalgam route

Good to know: The Shrine Board's base camp for the Pahalgam route is at Nunwan, a few kilometres short of Pahalgam. Camp and hut beds are allotted by the Board and its contractors; there are also hotels in Pahalgam town. Book early for the Yatra season and confirm the Board's current arrangements.

  2. 02

Baltal base camp area (Baltal route)

Best for: Pilgrims taking the shorter Baltal route

Good to know: Baltal sits in the Sind valley at the foot of Zoji La. The Board arranges camps, huts and a yatri facility here, and local operators run tents. Facilities are basic and the nights are cold. Many pilgrims base themselves in Sonamarg instead, which has hotels and an easier drive.

  3. 03

Sonamarg (hotel base for the Baltal route)

Best for: Pilgrims who want a proper bed before an early start

Good to know: A short drive from Baltal, with hotels and guesthouses of varying standards. Altitude is modest compared with the cave. Check Yatra traffic rules before planning a pre-dawn drive.

  4. 04

Pahalgam town (hotel base for the Pahalgam route)

Best for: Pilgrims who want a rest before or after the Pahalgam route

Good to know: A range of hotels and guesthouses, from basic to comfortable. Prices and availability are tight during the Yatra, so book well ahead.

  5. 05

    Srinagar

Best for: Arriving by air and resting before the road to either base camp

Good to know: The usual arrival point, with the widest choice of hotels. Allow time for check-points and convoy arrangements between Srinagar and the base camps.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
