Before you go

Amarnath with elderly parents: what to know

  • The Yatra is demanding and the Shrine Board requires a health certificate; see your own doctor well before registering and follow their advice, including on altitude.
  • The Board publishes age limits each year (13 to 70 in 2026). Check the current notice and do not travel on a hope that a rule will be relaxed.
  • Choose the route to match your fitness. The Baltal route is short but steep; the Pahalgam route is longer and spread over more days. Neither is easy.
  • Hire ponies or palkis only from Board-registered operators at Board-set rates where these apply, and agree the arrangement before you start.
  • Build in rest and acclimatisation days, pace yourself on the climbs, drink water regularly and turn back at the first serious sign of altitude sickness.
  • Pack for cold and rain at any time: thermals, a waterproof jacket, gloves, a cap, sturdy footwear with grip, a torch and your medicines, plus a copy of your permit and health certificate.

Easiest first

Places in Amarnath sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (2)

  • Nunwan Base Camp (Places to visit · An evening and night before starting the route) — Mostly level and reached by road, so manageable for older pilgrims, though camp conditions are basic, crowded and cold at night.
  • Yatra Langars (Culture and craft · A meal or tea stop at several points) — Langars are an easy place to sit, warm up and eat. Queues and crowding can be heavy in peak hours, and food is plain, so carry any special dietary needs.

Some walking — plan a break (2)

  • Helicopter to Panjtarni (Places to visit · A short flight, plus check-in and the final walk or ride to the cave) — Moderate. It removes the longest climb, which helps older pilgrims, but they still go the last 5 to 6 km on foot or by pony or palki at altitude. Weather delays are common, so keep reserve days.
  • Panjtarni (Places to visit · A night and an early start, or a short stop for helicopter passengers) — The meadow is open and relatively level, but it is cold and at altitude, and the surrounding climb is steep. Rest is essential, and the last stretch to the cave still needs care.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (5)

  • Amarnath Cave Temple (Places of worship · A day from Baltal if very fit; several days on the Pahalgam route) — Demanding. The cave is at altitude, in cold, with steep stretches on both routes. The Board requires a health certificate and sets age limits; ponies and palkis exist, but they do not remove altitude risk. Take your doctor's advice first.
  • Baltal Route to the Cave (Places to visit · A long day each way on foot; the round trip is about 28 km) — Demanding. The climb is steep from the start and the whole stretch is at altitude. Ponies and palkis can be hired, but older pilgrims should consider an overnight stop and need their doctor's clearance first.
  • Mahagunas Pass (Places to visit · A full day's stage between the two camps) — Demanding. Steep, high and cold, with thin air near the top. Ponies and palkis operate, but even they bring risk. Only pilgrims with medical clearance should attempt it.
  • Pahalgam Route to the Cave (Places to visit · Several days on foot, plus return time; confirm the Board's schedule) — Demanding. Several long days at altitude, with a pass at about 4,276 m. The gradual build-up helps acclimatisation, but fatigue and cold build up. Ponies and palkis help, but you need a doctor's clearance and a rest plan.
  • Sheshnag Lake (Places to visit · An evening and night at the camp during the Yatra) — Demanding. The camp is at altitude and cold, reached after a long climb. Sleep is poor for many people, so older pilgrims should rest well and have medical clearance.

Practical tips for Amarnath

  • Registration. Register with the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board before you travel. The permit names your route and date, and pilgrims carry an RFID card. Do not pay anyone outside official channels to guarantee a slot.
  • Health certificate. The Board has required a compulsory health certificate from every yatri, from an authorised doctor or medical institution. Book your check-up early and carry the certificate on the route.
  • Altitude. The cave is at about 3,888 m and Mahagunas Pass on the Pahalgam route is about 4,276 m. Go slowly, rest often and turn back for headache, breathlessness or confusion that does not ease.
  • Weather and cold. Cold, rain and snow can arrive at any hour even in midsummer. Wear thermals and waterproofs, and respect any halt the Board or the authorities order. A cloudburst in July 2022 near the cave killed pilgrims, so take weather alerts seriously.
  • Getting there. Yatra-season road traffic is regulated, with convoys and check-points between Jammu and the valley. Allow generous margins, especially for flights from Srinagar.
  • Footwear and clothing. Sturdy shoes with grip, a rain cover for your bag, gloves, a cap and a walking stick matter more than anything else you can buy. Break in new shoes before you go.
  • Ponies and palkis. Ponies and palkis are available on both routes. Use registered operators, agree rates and the drop point before you start, and do not ride when the track feels unsafe.
  • Photography and phones. Check the Board's rules before taking a camera or drone. Mobile coverage is patchy and batteries drain fast in the cold, so carry a power bank and an offline copy of your permit.
