The short answer

Panjtarni: what visitors should know first

Panjtarni is a stop on the way, not a destination. Pilgrims on the Pahalgam route camp here the night before darshan, and helicopter passengers land here, then go on foot or by pony. Check the Board for camp and helicopter arrangements.

History and context

The story behind Panjtarni

The Shrine Board's route description places Panjtarni after the descent from Mahagunas, with the camp on the meadows at about 3,657 m.

The Sangam of the Amravati and Panjtarni rivers is said to lie on the way to the cave, and some pilgrims bathe in the Amravati near the cave before darshan, though I could not verify that from an official source.

Why it matters

Why Panjtarni is worth your time

In the traditional story, Panjtarni is where Shiva left behind the five elements: earth, water, air, fire and sky, before entering the cave with Parvati. The name refers to five streams said to have flowed from his locks of hair.

Practically, it is the staging point for the last day. It is the best place to rest properly before the final stretch, and the helicopter landing point for those who fly. How you use the night here, with food, warmth and sleep, often decides how the final day goes.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Panjtarni is reached from the Mahagunas descent, a broad meadow at about 3,657 m, with streams running through it. Pilgrims on the Pahalgam route normally spend the third night here, in Board-permitted camps or tents, eating at the langars.

It is also where helicopters from Baltal and from the Pahalgam side land, according to the sources I read. From the helipad, the cave is about 5 to 6 km away, which pilgrims cover on foot, by pony or by palki, so the flight does not remove the effort.

The next morning starts early. Many pilgrims leave before dawn for darshan and return to Panjtarni the same day. Take warm layers, a headlamp and water, and respect any instruction to wait or turn back.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Eat and sleep well before the final stretch
  • Keep warm layers and a headlamp ready
  • Confirm helicopter rules with the Board
  • Start early for darshan
  • Allow time to descend before dark
