Arambol (also written Harmal) is a fishing village in Pernem taluka, about 25 km north of Panaji, and its beach is the northernmost of North Goa's well-known stretches. Keri Beach lies to the north and Mandrem to the south. The shoreline mixes sand with rocky patches and a wooded headland, Waghcolomb Hill, that rises behind the sand. It draws many international visitors, mainly from November to March, and has been associated with long-stay travellers since the 1970s.
The character is quieter and more informal than Baga or Calangute. Cafés, yoga and music classes, sarong stalls and small guesthouses line the lanes behind the beach, and a path along the north end leads over rocks to Paliem, a small cove with the Sweet Water Lake, a spring-fed pool about 200 m from the sea. Paragliders take off from the hill in season, and an evening drum circle and sunset market is part of the routine. Outside the season many shacks and cafés close.
Swimming needs more care here than on gentler beaches. Drishti Marine lifeguards work the beach in season, and local news reports describe rescues from rip currents at Arambol, so follow the flags and swim only where lifeguards advise. Swimming, coastal water sports and fishing are prohibited statewide during the monsoon.
Arambol suits independent travellers, couples, longer stays and anyone interested in yoga, music or paragliding. It is less convenient for families with small children and for older travellers, because the lanes are narrow, the beach is long and uneven in places, and the nearest big hospital and railway station are some distance away. Use this page as a base for the beach and its surroundings, and check that any seasonal business is open before you plan around it.
