The short answer

Rasdhoo: what visitors should know first

A sensible first base if you want a local-island stay without a long journey. It is very small, so you will see it in an hour and spend the rest of your time on the water or resting.

History and context

The story behind Rasdhoo

Alif Alif Atoll was created as an administrative division on 1 March 1984 from the northern part of Ari Atoll, Rasdhukuramathi Atoll and Thoddoo, with Rasdhoo as its capital.

Why it matters

Why Rasdhoo is worth your time

Rasdhoo shows how the atoll-capital model works in the Maldives: a very small island carrying the administrative role, with a population of around 1,300 recorded in 2022. Because it is the capital of Alif Alif Atoll, it has the ferry and speedboat links that other local islands often lack, and that matters if you are travelling with parents.

It is also a gateway to the north of Ari Atoll's water-based activities. The island was the only inhabited island in the small natural atoll that bears its name, so everything from the lagoon to the outer reef is reached by boat. For a first local-island stay, it is the least complicated option in this guide.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The compact island

You can cover the entire island on foot in under an hour, which suits a rest-day pace.

  2. 02

    The boat links

It has among the better ferry and speedboat links in the northern atoll.

  3. 03

    The surrounding atoll

Diving and snorkelling trips set out from the harbour.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat Rasdhoo as a compact base. Arrive by speedboat or ferry, drop your bags, and walk the whole island in less than an hour: it is about 575 m long and 400 m wide. The harbour, the village lanes and the beach sections used by visitors are all close together. Walk early, before the heat, and keep dress modest in the village.

The real purpose of a stay here is the water. Guesthouses and dive centres arrange snorkelling and diving trips in the surrounding atoll, which is a small natural atoll of its own, with Rasdhoo as its only inhabited island. Ask what each trip includes, and whether the boat has life jackets for non-swimmers, because that is the question that matters for older parents.

Because there are around sixteen guesthouses on an island this size (the 2016 count on Wikipedia), compare reviews carefully and ask about air conditioning, hot water and the distance to the jetty. Plan one slow evening on the seafront and do not overfill the days.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm the speedboat or ferry time and the pier your guesthouse uses
  • Ask for rooms with air conditioning and a short walk to the jetty
  • Check that snorkel trips supply life jackets
  • Keep cash for small purchases

No. It is a local island where alcohol is not sold and modest dress is expected away from the visitor beach.

The island is flat and tiny, but the boat journey and the sun are the demanding parts. A good guesthouse near the jetty helps.
