Ari Atoll sits west of Malé and is one of the main atolls where Indian visitors spend a resort holiday. It is 105 islands strung along a rectangular reef about 89 km long, and for administrative purposes it is divided into two: Alif Alif Atoll in the north, with Rasdhoo as its capital, and Alif Dhaal in the south, with Mahibadhoo. More than twenty islands are given over to resorts, and the rest are fishing villages, farm land or empty sandbanks.
This guide is about choosing between those worlds. A resort gives you food, a doctor and a house reef in one place, but costs far more. A local island stay, in a guesthouse on Rasdhoo, Ukulhas, Thoddoo, Dhigurah or Dhangethi, is cheaper and shows you real village life, although you must follow local rules on alcohol and dress, and food is built around tuna.
The reasons to come are the water. Wikipedia describes whale sharks as year-round residents of the Alif Dhaal side, divers know thilas such as Maaya Thila, and the atoll is only about a 30-minute seaplane flight from Malé. The reasons for caution are practical: long boat journeys, limited medical care outside Malé and strong tidal currents.
Be clear about what this guide cannot promise. We found no pure-vegetarian or Jain restaurant in the atoll that we could verify, and we could confirm only one Indian restaurant, at a resort. Plan food in advance, travel with insurance that covers evacuation, and treat sightings of animals as luck.
