Ari Atoll with elderly parents

What to see, where to stay and how to pace Ari Atoll when someone in the family walks slowly, tires easily or simply prefers a calmer day.

Before you go

Ari Atoll with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan boat journeys for the morning, and ask whether the boat has a covered seat, life jackets and a step down to the jetty. Fatal propeller accidents have been reported near South Ari whale-shark sites, so choose licensed operators.
  • The islands are flat, but sand and heat make walking tiring. Walk before 10 am and after 4 pm, and carry water.
  • GOV.UK says the only fully equipped hospitals are in Malé and Hulhumalé. Mahibadhoo has an atoll hospital with basic tests, but buy insurance that covers treatment and medical evacuation.
  • Carry medicines in their original packaging, with a doctor's note, and keep a spare supply in hand luggage.
  • For parents who do not swim, choose a resort or guesthouse with a calm lagoon, and skip open-water whale-shark trips.
  • Check whether your accommodation has air conditioning, a nearby jetty and a fan-free quiet period for rest.

Easiest first

Places in Ari Atoll sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (7)

  • Dhangethi (Places to visit · Half a day, or 1 to 3 nights) — The island is under a kilometre long and flat, so walking is easy; heat, sandy paths and the boat journey are the challenges. A health centre exists on the island, but major treatment is far away.
  • Mahibadhoo (Places to visit · Part of a day, if passing through) — Mahibadhoo is flat and compact, with a harbour and park. Its value is the nearby medical care, not a walking route.
  • Mathiveri (Places to visit · One night or more) — The island is tiny and flat, but the sandbank wade needs care with tides, and the speedboat journey from Malé is the demanding part. Older visitors should not wade across without a guide.
  • Rasdhoo (Places to visit · Half a day, or 2 to 3 nights as a base) — The island is tiny and flat, with no steep ground, though the sun is strong and shade limited. Staying here means a speedboat or ferry from Malé, with boarding that may include a step and a wet landing.
  • Tandoor Mahal, Niva Kuramathi (Food and restaurants · About 1.5 hours) — Resort restaurants are generally level, but the island is large, so ask about transport to the restaurant. Confirm seating and spice levels with the staff when you book.
  • Thoddoo (Places to visit · Half a day to one night) — The island is small and flat, but lanes are sandy, shade is patchy and boat landings can involve a step down. Older travellers should carry water and rest through the middle of the day.
  • Ukulhas (Places to visit · Half a day, or 2 to 3 nights) — The island is small, level and easy to walk, with sandy paths. The main strain is the boat journey from Malé and the heat; ask the guesthouse about its jetty and bag handling.

Some walking — plan a break (2)

  • Dhigurah (Places to visit · One or two nights) — The island is flat but about 3.2 km long and very narrow, with little shade. Journeys from Malé are long, and snorkel trips involve boarding small boats, so older travellers should ask about ladders and life jackets.
  • Whale shark outings in South Ari (Places to visit · Half a day) — Boarding small boats, jumping in from the side and swimming in open water in swell is tiring. Heart conditions, breathing problems and poor swimming make it unsuitable without medical advice.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Maaya Thila (Sports · A half-day dive trip) — Not suitable for most older travellers unless they are certified and fit. Currents can be strong, and the Maldives limits recreational dives to 30 m without decompression stops.

Practical tips for Ari Atoll

  • Weather and monsoon. The north-east monsoon, from early December to March, is drier. The south-west monsoon, from late April to October, brings stronger winds and storms. Temperatures stay near 30 to 32 degrees all year.
  • Getting around. Move between islands by seaplane, speedboat or public ferry. Book transfers through your resort or guesthouse and confirm times, since schedules change.
  • Dress. Outside resorts, cover shoulders and avoid short or tight shorts. When bathing near local islands, cover arms and upper legs. Nudity and topless sunbathing are not allowed anywhere, including resorts.
  • Alcohol and customs. Alcohol is sold only at resorts. Idols for worship, pork and alcohol are barred from import, which matters if you travel with a small puja set. Check the rules before you pack.
  • Boat safety. Ask for life jackets and a licensed operator. GOV.UK reports fatal propeller accidents near South Ari whale-shark sites, and warns that propeller-guard rules are not fully enforced.
  • Swimming. Strong tidal currents have caused drownings. Swim only in supervised or tourist areas, follow flags and ask staff where it is safe.
  • Health and insurance. Only Malé and Hulhumalé have fully equipped hospitals, so insurance that covers local treatment and medical evacuation is essential. Dial 102 for an ambulance.
  • Ramadan. Outside resorts, do not eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight hours in Ramadan. Ramadan 2027 may start around 7 February.
