Why it matters

Why Pottuvil Town is worth your time

Pottuvil is the administrative and market centre for the area, and the 2004 tsunami destroyed much of it along with Arugam Bay. It remains the place where the local economy runs on fishing, farming and trade rather than surf tourism.

For older travellers, knowing where the pharmacies are matters. Medical facilities near Arugam Bay are limited, and serious cases involve a long road transfer to larger towns such as Batticaloa, about 117 km to the north. Travel insurance and a basic medicine kit are therefore not optional. Spending an hour in Pottuvil on arrival is a sensible habit.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Pottuvil is the practical hub of the area. Most buses stop here rather than in Arugam Bay, about 4 km away, so you may arrive in town and then take a tuk-tuk on to your guesthouse, or walk if you have little luggage. A travel source reports about Rs 1,000 for the tuk-tuk in 2025, but agree the fare first.

Do your shopping here. The town has the only air-conditioned supermarket and most of the pharmacies in the area, and prices are generally lower than in the beach strip. Stock up on medicines, water, snacks, sun protection and anything you cannot do without before heading to quieter spots such as Panama or Kumana.

Combine your visit with Muhudu Maha Viharaya and the lagoon so that the trip into town becomes a half-day outing instead of an errand.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Shop in the morning
  • Agree tuk-tuk fares first
  • Bring prescriptions and medicines
  • Combine with the lagoon or temple
