Arugam Bay is a small beach town on Sri Lanka's south-east coast, in Ampara District of the Eastern Province, about 4 km south of the market town of Pottuvil. It is known for its surf: the main point is a right-hand reef break and the bay is the only place in the country that has regularly hosted international surfing competitions since 2004. The town itself is informal, with guesthouses, cafes and board hire strung along one road.
There is more here than surf. Kumana National Park, about 44 km to the south by road via Panama and Okanda, is a Ramsar wetland known for birds. Lahugala Kitulana National Park, inland, is a small park associated with elephants. Pottuvil has a seaside temple, Muhudu Maha Viharaya, and the ruins of Magul Maha Viharaya lie nearby. A boat trip on the Pottuvil lagoon is a gentle half-day.
The key fact for planning is the season. Travel sources describe the surf season as running from roughly April to October, with July and August the busiest. Climate figures for nearby Pottuvil show the driest months from May to September and heavy rain from about October to January. Many hotels and restaurants close from November to March, so a December trip is a poor idea.
This is not an easy destination. It is a long road journey from Colombo or from Ella, medical facilities are limited and diet choices for vegetarian or Jain travellers are narrow. It suits families who like quiet beaches and wildlife, with a driver, flexibility and realistic expectations. Check current entry requirements for Indian passport holders on the official Sri Lankan ETA site before you book.
