Before you go
Arugam Bay with elderly parents: what to know
- Visit between May and September; avoid November to March when rain and closures are common.
- Plan one outing a day and rest through the hot midday hours.
- Choose a hotel with air-conditioning, a pool or shaded garden and ground-floor rooms, and ask about steps.
- The nearest large medical centres are in towns such as Batticaloa, about 117 km north, so carry regular medicines and travel insurance.
- Kumana is a long jeep day on rough tracks; consider Lahugala or the lagoon boat trip if back or joints are a concern.
Easiest first
Places in Arugam Bay sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (6)
- Arugam Bay Main Point (Sports · A morning or evening to watch; several days if you want to surf or learn) — Watching is easy: the beach road is flat and cafes have shaded seating. Sand is soft and heat is strong at midday, so older travellers do best at sunrise or late afternoon, with a hat and plenty of water.
- Lahugala Kitulana National Park (Places to visit · 2 to 4 hours) — Viewing is mostly from a vehicle or the roadside, which is manageable for older travellers. Expect heat, insects near water and uneven ground if you step out.
- Muhudu Maha Viharaya (Places of worship · 45 to 60 minutes) — The site is mostly flat but sandy, and you walk barefoot in the temple area, which can be hot at midday. Visit early or late and bring socks if permitted.
- Panama Beach (Sports · 1 to 3 hours as a stop) — The beach is flat but shadeless and services are limited, so carry water and snacks. The road south is rural; ask your driver about its current condition, which can change after rain.
- Pottuvil Lagoon Boat Trip (Places to visit · About 2 hours) — Mostly seated in a small boat. Getting on and off can be awkward for people with stiff knees, so ask for help at the jetty. Bring a hat and water.
- Pottuvil Town (Shopping · 1 to 2 hours) — Flat town streets, but traffic and heat. Take a tuk-tuk between stops and shop in the morning.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Kumana National Park (Places to visit · A full day, about 6 hours for a typical jeep safari plus travel) — The safari is by jeep, not on foot, but the tracks are rough and the vehicle is open, so people with back or joint problems should think twice. Heat is strong; carry water and sun protection.
- Magul Maha Viharaya (Places to visit · 1 hour) — The ground is uneven, the terrace has steps and there is little seating or shade. Older visitors can enjoy the causeway and lower area without climbing.

Practical tips for Arugam Bay
- Season. Plan for May to September. Many hotels and restaurants close from November to March, and rain is heaviest from October to January.
- Entry rules. Indian nationals can apply for a free ETA, valid 30 days, according to the official site. Rules change, so check eta.gov.lk before travel.
- Getting there. Roads are long. Expect a very long journey from Colombo, and allow a day from Ella or Batticaloa. Use a private car for flexibility.
- Heat. Daytime highs are about 33 to 35 degrees C in the dry months. Do outings early or late and rest at midday.
- Sea safety. Currents run along the reef. Swim only in areas locals advise, and heed any flags.
- Dress and temples. Dress modestly at temples, with shoulders and knees covered, and remove shoes and hats. Ask before photographing people.
- Money. Carry enough local currency in small notes, as ATMs and card machines can be unreliable in small places. Confirm card acceptance with your hotel.
- Health. Medical facilities near Arugam Bay are limited. Carry medicines, insect repellent and travel insurance, and note that Pottuvil has most pharmacies.
