Arugam Bay neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Arugam Bay beach strip (Ulle)

Best for: Walking to cafes and the beach

Good to know: Most guesthouses and cafes sit along one road. Convenient, but busy and noisy in July and August. Ask about air-conditioning, ground-floor rooms and generator or power cuts.

  2. 02

Quieter south end of the bay

Best for: Travellers who want calm over nightlife

Good to know: Fewer bars and less traffic, but a longer walk to cafes. Check lighting and path conditions after dark.

  3. 03

    Pottuvil town

Best for: Budget and practical stays

Good to know: About 4 km north, with buses, supermarket and pharmacies. Less atmosphere, and you will need a tuk-tuk to reach the beach.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
