Plan 01

1 day in Arugam Bay

  1. 01

Day 1: Beach, temple and lagoon

Start at sunrise on the beach road, then have breakfast at your guesthouse. Take a tuk-tuk to Pottuvil to see Muhudu Maha Viharaya in the cooler morning hours and pick up supplies at the supermarket and pharmacy. Rest through midday heat. In the late afternoon, take a boat trip on the Pottuvil lagoon and return for dinner at your hotel.

Muhudu Maha Viharaya45 to 60 minutesEasyMorning or late afternoon; sunrise over the beach is pleasant

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 02

2 days in Arugam Bay

  1. 01

    Day 1: Beach and Pottuvil

Walk the beach at sunrise, then visit Muhudu Maha Viharaya and Pottuvil town in the morning. Rest after lunch and take the lagoon boat trip in late afternoon.

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Magul Maha Viharaya: The ground is uneven, the terrace has steps and there is little seating or shade. Older visitors can enjoy the causeway and lower area without climbing.

Plan 03

3 days in Arugam Bay

  1. 01

    Day 1: Slow arrival

Arrive, settle in and walk the beach in the late afternoon. Watch the surf from a cafe table and keep the evening quiet.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Kumana day

Leave early with a jeep and driver for Kumana National Park, via Panama and Okanda. Plan a full day, with breaks, and expect to be tired on return.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Kumana National ParkA full day, about 6 hours for a typical jeep safari plus travelModerateApril to July for migratory birds; dry months for access

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Kumana National Park: The safari is by jeep, not on foot, but the tracks are rough and the vehicle is open, so people with back or joint problems should think twice. Heat is strong; carry water and sun protection.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Pottuvil and lagoon

Visit Muhudu Maha Viharaya and Pottuvil town in the morning, with a late-afternoon lagoon trip. Add Magul Maha Viharaya and Lahugala if you have energy and good light.

Pacing

Pacing a Arugam Bay trip for parents and children

  • Visit between May and September; avoid November to March when rain and closures are common.
  • Plan one outing a day and rest through the hot midday hours.
  • Choose a hotel with air-conditioning, a pool or shaded garden and ground-floor rooms, and ask about steps.
  • The nearest large medical centres are in towns such as Batticaloa, about 117 km north, so carry regular medicines and travel insurance.
  • Kumana is a long jeep day on rough tracks; consider Lahugala or the lagoon boat trip if back or joints are a concern.
  • Season: Plan for May to September. Many hotels and restaurants close from November to March, and rain is heaviest from October to January.
