Plan 01

1 day at Ashwem Beach

  1. 01

Day 1: Sand, a long lunch and a river paddle

Start with a slow breakfast at Prana on the Mandrem side, then walk the sand before the sun gets strong. Return to your hotel to rest through the hottest hours. Have a late lunch at a beachfront restaurant such as La Plage if it is open this season, and book ahead in December and January. In the late afternoon, take a paddle-board or kayak session on the river at Vaayu if you are comfortable on water, or simply watch the sunset from a sun bed. Finish with an early dinner at L'Atelier or La Cucina in Morjim, and arrange your taxi back in advance.

La Cucina1 to 1.5 hoursEasyDinner, or an early evening meal before live music

Plan 02

2 days at Ashwem Beach

  1. 01

Day 1: Beach morning and restaurants

Spend the morning on the sand near your resort, with breakfast at your hotel or Prana. Rest at midday. In the afternoon, have a late seafood lunch at Ashwe 351 at Palma Beach Resort or at a shack of your choice, then stay for the sunset. Dinner at La Plage (check opening and reserve) or at L'Atelier.

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

  2. 02

Day 2: Chapora Fort and Morjim

Drive to Chapora Fort in the cooler morning, allow about 90 minutes including the steep climb, and look north across the river towards Morjim. Return for lunch at La Cucina in Morjim or Mimi's café on the Morjim-Ashvem road, rest, then finish with a gentle beach walk and a yoga or spa session at your resort.

Pace: Chapora Fort involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Chapora Fort: The path up is steep and rocky with little shade, and the interior is mostly ruined walls. Choose the cooler hours, wear proper shoes, or enjoy the view from the road below.

Plan 03

3 days at Ashwem Beach

  1. 01

    Day 1: Settle in

Arrive, check in and walk the sand near your hotel. Keep the afternoon free, and have an early dinner at the restaurant attached to your resort, such as L'Atelier at Anahata Retreat or the sea-facing restaurant at Palm Grove.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
L'Atelier at Anahata Retreat1 to 1.5 hoursEasyLunch, or an early dinner before sunset
Anahata Retreat2 to 4 nightsModerateNovember to February
Palm Grove2 to 5 nightsModerateNovember to February

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Anahata Retreat: Rooms are huts and bungalows reached across sand, and the retreat says it is not suitable for disabled guests. Ask for a room near the entrance and confirm cooling, as not all rooms are air-conditioned.

With parents at Palm Grove: Bungalows sit at ground level on the beach with sand and some steps between them. Ask about the room nearest the restaurant and check cooling and bathroom layout when booking.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Water and wellness

Book a morning surf, paddle-board or kayak session at Vaayu Waterman's Village, or a beach yoga class if your resort offers one. Take lunch and a long rest, then a spa treatment in the afternoon. Watch sunset from the beach and eat at La Plage if it is open.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Fort and market

Go to Chapora Fort early, then continue to Mapusa for its market on the way back if you want shopping, noting that the market is a busy, hot outing. Return for a late lunch at La Cucina in Morjim or a café stop at Mimi's, and spend the afternoon by the pool or on the sand.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Ashwem Beach trip for parents and children

  • Choose a resort with seating, shade and easy vehicle drop-off. The sand is soft, and most huts have steps and no lift.
  • Plan beach time for early morning or late afternoon and rest from noon to 3 pm; the sun is strong on open sand even in winter.
  • Swim only where lifeguards are on duty and no red flag is flying, and not at all during the monsoon. Rocks have appeared in places after erosion.
  • Book dinner tables ahead from December to February and ask for an early sitting, as music gets louder after dark.
  • Arrange taxis in advance for evenings; cabs can be hard to find late on the beach road.
  • Chapora Fort is a steep, rocky climb, so go early and only if you are comfortable; the views from the beach are a gentler alternative.
