Baa Atoll is a western atoll of the Maldives, about 100 to 135 km north of Malé depending on the island. Wikipedia counts 75 islands, of which 13 are inhabited, and the atoll was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in June 2011. Its capital is Eydhafushi, and most visitors never see it, because they arrive by seaplane or the short domestic flight to Dharavandhoo and go straight to a resort.
The atoll's reputation rests on its marine life. Hanifaru Bay is known for large seasonal gatherings of manta rays, and the reefs hold turtles, dolphins and whale sharks. Access to the bay is controlled by permit, so go through a licensed operator or your resort and expect the experience to depend on tide and season.
For an Indian family, Baa is a resort destination first. Food, medical help and transfers are easier on a resort island, but a few local islands, including Thulhaadhoo for lacquerwork and Kendhoo for herbal medicine, are worth a short guided visit. Older travellers should plan the boat or seaplane stages with care and keep insurance that covers medical evacuation.
We could verify very little vegetarian, Jain or vegan dining here. The one clear lead is a vegan restaurant at a resort; we could not confirm any pure-vegetarian or Jain restaurant. Write to your resort in advance about food.

Out of season, swap it for a short visit to Thulhaadhoo to see lacquerwork. Return before dark, as boats and seaplanes run in daylight.
