Why it matters
Why Aihole is worth your time
Aihole is often called a laboratory of temple design, since builders tried many forms here before Pattadakal. Seeing it helps you read the Chalukya story from the 6th century on.
It also shows religions side by side, with Hindu, Jain and a Buddhist monument within walking distance of each other. Few places in India let you compare so many early temple plans in one village, and the visit rewards a slow pace, a good driver and a willingness to skip some stops.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Start at the Durga temple complex, the most studied building, with an apsidal plan and carved friezes. Walk around the porch and look at the pillars and figures. Then visit the Lad Khan temple, which has a timber-like roof in stone.
Take the climb to the Meguti Jain temple on the hill, which carries the Ravikirti inscription of 634 CE praising Pulakeshin II. The view over the village is a good reward. If time allows, see the Ravanaphadi cave temple.
Pick your temples and leave the rest. There are over a hundred, and most visitors see five or six. Eat lunch in the village or on the way back.
