Why it matters
Why Pattadakal is worth your time
Pattadakal was the place where Chalukya kings were crowned, and its temples show the dynasty at the height of its confidence. UNESCO inscribed it in 1987 for the blend of northern and southern styles.
The Virupaksha temple, built by a queen to mark victories, shows that women patrons shaped royal architecture. Seeing it after Badami's caves lets you trace the move from rock-cut to freestanding temple. The compound is also tidy and easy to walk, which makes it the most comfortable of the Chalukya sites for older visitors.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Enter the compound and walk first to the Virupaksha temple, the largest and most refined building. Look at its pillars, which carry scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and at the standing Nandi. Walk slowly around the outside and look at the panels on the walls.
Then visit the neighbouring temples, including Sangameshwara, Papanatha and others. Notice how some are in the southern style and some in the northern, and how the builders mixed the two. Take a few minutes in the shade of the compound.
Allow time for the lawn and the walls to give you a sense of the site's scale. Then continue to Aihole, about 10 km away, for the earlier experiments that led to these buildings.
