How to experience it
Drive down from Badrinath in the morning, arriving by mid-day. Joshimath is built on steep slopes, with the town clustering around a central market area. Park near the temple or market, then walk through the bazaar. You will find shops selling local crafts, woolens, and foodstuffs, and restaurants serving Kumaoni food and Chinese noodles.
Visit the Adi Shankaracharya Math, the seat of one of the four cardinal monasteries of the Dashanami order established by Adi Shankara. The math is a modest compound on the hillside, but it is a place of genuine spiritual significance and pilgrimage. Ask a local to show you.
If you have time, drive up to Auli (20 km, 45 minutes by winding road). In summer, the meadows are open and you can walk, or take the cable car for views over the Himalayas. In winter, Auli is India's premier ski resort, though facilities are basic by international standards. The views are worth the drive regardless of the season.
