Plan 01

1 day in Bandhavgarh

  1. 01

Day 1: One morning safari and the museum

If you only have a day, book a morning safari in the zone your permit allows and be at the gate at the opening time shown on your booking. Return for a late breakfast and rest through the heat. In the afternoon, visit the Baghel Museum near Tala if it is open, then take a second drive if you have a permit. Confirm exact safari timings, which shift by season, with the reserve or your lodge.

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 02

2 days in Bandhavgarh

  1. 01

Day 1: Tala at dawn, museum and rest

Take a morning safari in Tala, which covers the meadows beneath Bandhavgarh Hill. Breakfast at the lodge, rest, then visit the Baghel Museum. Take an afternoon drive, ideally in a different zone if your permit allows.

  2. 02

Day 2: A second zone and the fort route

Do a morning safari in Magdhi or Khitauli for a different kind of forest. Lunch and rest. If your Tala permit includes the route to Shesh Shaiya, use it as a gentle afternoon drive, remembering the final approach is a walk.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Shesh ShaiyaAbout 45–60 minutes including the walkModerateWinter and early morning, when the water and light are best

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Shesh Shaiya: Guides describe a walk of roughly half an hour on a rough, partly sloping path to reach the sculpture. There are no rails or seating that I could verify, so older travellers with knee or balance issues should ask the guide before committing.

Plan 03

3 days in Bandhavgarh

  1. 01

    Day 1: Arrive and settle

Reach Tala by midday after the transfer from Umaria, Katni or Jabalpur. Rest, then a short walk or a visit to the Baghel Museum. Plan an early night; dawn starts are cold and early.

  2. 02

Day 2: Two safaris in Tala

A morning safari in Tala, a long break, then an afternoon drive. Tala holds the meadows, the Charan Ganga stream and the way up towards Shesh Shaiya, which is why most first-time visitors book it first.

  3. 03

Day 3: Magdhi or Khitauli, then depart

A final morning drive in Magdhi or Khitauli for a different habitat and a quieter feel. Leave after a late breakfast; Umaria station is about an hour away and Jabalpur around four hours.

Pacing

Pacing a Bandhavgarh trip for parents and children

  • Book the morning drive for the first full day; it is the coldest, so carry a warm layer, a scarf and gloves in winter, even when midday is mild.
  • Sit on the middle row of the jeep if you have back or neck trouble; the front is bumpier and the rear is dustier.
  • Tracks are rough. Bring a seat cushion or a rolled towel, and ask your lodge about the vehicle's seating before you book.
  • Shesh Shaiya is reached on foot from the vehicle stop, and parts of it are uneven or sloping. Ask your guide how long the walk is and choose whether to go.
  • Keep a day of rest between double safari days. Most older travellers find two drives a day is the limit.
  • Carry medication, drinking water and a hat; there are no toilets or shops inside the park.
