Tala (near the main gate)
Best for: First-timers and short trips who want a short drive to the Tala gate
Good to know: Most lodges, the safari booking offices and the Baghel Museum are here. Rooms range from state-run and budget to luxury safari lodges. Quiet at night, cold in winter; confirm that your room has heating in December and January.
Sights in this area: Baghel Museum, Bandhavgarh Caves, Bandhavgarh Fort, Chakradhara and Rajbhera Meadows, Shesh Shaiya, Tala Zone
Hotels we cover here: MPT White Tiger Forest Lodge, Mahua Kothi
- 02
Magdhi and Dhamokar side
Best for: Travellers who plan most drives in Magdhi, and want a quieter setting
Good to know: A smaller number of resorts sit on this side, on the road to the Magdhi gate. Check the road distance to the Tala gate if you hold Tala permits, since the transfer can take a while.
- 03
Khitauli and Panpatha side
Best for: Travellers who want fewer vehicles and a different feel
Good to know: A quieter zone with fewer lodges. The Khitauli and Panpatha gates are some distance from Tala, so choose it deliberately rather than by default.
- 04
Umaria town
Best for: Budget stays and arrival by train
Good to know: Umaria has the railway station and basic hotels, but the park gates are around 30–40 km away, which adds time to every dawn safari.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
