Bandipur is less a town than a forest with a few lodges attached. The Bandipur Tiger Reserve lies in Chamarajanagar district of southern Karnataka, where the Deccan plateau meets the Western Ghats, and it sits beside Nagarhole to the north-west, Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu to the south and Wayanad in Kerala to the south-west. It began as a small sanctuary created by the Maharaja of Mysore in 1931, became a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 1973 and has been part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve since 1986.

The visit is built around early-morning and late-afternoon safaris. The Karnataka Forest Department runs shared mini-bus trips from the range office, and Jungle Lodges & Resorts is listed by Karnataka Tourism as the licensed jeep operator. Elephants, gaur, chital and sambar are the realistic sightings; tigers and leopards are present but a bonus, not a promise. The highway between Mysuru and Ooty cuts through the reserve, so wildlife is often seen from the road too, and night traffic is restricted on parts of it.

The other fixed point is Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta, the reserve's highest hill, with a Krishna temple reached only by forest-department bus. Gundlupet, the nearest town, is known for its flower farms, which colour the fields beside the highway in the late summer and Onam season.

For parents and older travellers Bandipur works well if you accept the rhythm: a rest between the two safaris, vehicles throughout, no long walks and very little to do after dark. Stay inside or close to the park, book your slots in advance in the busy months, and keep expectations honest. A quiet, green morning with elephants is a good result.

Bandipur itinerary

One good day

1 day in Bandipur

Arrive the evening before if you can, as the first safari slot starts early. Take the morning forest-department mini-bus or a jeep slot from the lodge you have booked, then return for a late breakfast and a rest. In the late morning drive towards Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta and take the forest-department bus up to the Krishna temple, keeping to the visiting hours at the check post. Have lunch in Gundlupet and, if the season suits, stop beside the flower fields on the way back. Finish with an early dinner and a sleep, because the road to Mysuru or Bengaluru is best driven in daylight.

Day-by-day plan →

Two days

2 days in Bandipur

Reach Bandipur by lunchtime from Mysuru, check in and rest through the heat of the day. Take an afternoon safari, either the forest-department bus or a jeep slot. Dinner is at your lodge; keep the evening unhurried, since there is little else to do after dark and driving through the forest at night is restricted.

Three unhurried days

3 days in Bandipur

Travel from Mysuru in the morning, reach the lodge for lunch and rest. Take the afternoon safari, then an early night. Use the first day to confirm your safari slots with the lodge or range office.

What and where to eat in Bandipur.

Food to try in Bandipur

Food and restaurants

There is no restaurant scene in Bandipur: meals are taken at the lodge where you stay, and most resorts include breakfast, lunch and dinner in the package. Expect South Indian breakfasts of idli, dosa or upma, and simple Karnataka meals with rice, sambar and vegetable palya at lunch, usually with a North Indian or continental option on the evening menu.

If you want a wider choice, Gundlupet is the nearest town of any size and has small local eateries and coffee shops along the highway. Take your own water and snacks on safari days, since the early slot means you leave before breakfast. Check your lodge's dietary options in advance if you need vegetarian, Jain or low-salt meals, because supply is limited this far from a city.

Shopping in Bandipur

Shopping

Bandipur has nothing you would call shopping. The lodges sometimes have small shops with books, caps and wildlife souvenirs, and the Forest Department may sell items near the range office. For crafts and silk, do your shopping in Mysuru before or after the trip.

Gundlupet is known for flowers rather than souvenirs, so the most memorable purchase on this road is fresh garlands or marigolds from a roadside seller, if you are carrying them home. Cash is useful in this area, as signal and card machines are unreliable.

Choose without overthinking

Which Bandipur experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Forest-department bus safari or a jeep safari?

The bus is the budget option, run from the range office in fixed morning and afternoon slots, and it suits families who want a simple outing. A jeep takes fewer people, can pause longer and gives a clearer view, but it costs far more and is booked through Jungle Lodges & Resorts. If you can only do one, make it the jeep for sightings and the bus for value.

Morning or evening safari?

Mornings are cool, light is soft and activity is higher, but you leave very early. Afternoon slots are easier for older travellers and good for elephants coming to water. Doing one of each gives the best chance of a good sighting.

Stay inside the reserve zone or in Gundlupet?

Staying beside the reserve means a short drive to the safari gate and a calm evening among trees. Gundlupet offers more shops and food choices but is about 17 km from the park, so early slots are harder.

Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta or Mudumalai for the second half-day?

The temple hill is closer, easy to fit into a morning and has a spiritual draw. Mudumalai is a wildlife extension with an elephant camp but involves crossing into Tamil Nadu and checking separate timings, so keep it for a three-day trip.

Bandipur travel tips

  1. 01

    Book early in season

Safari seats, especially jeeps, fill up from October to May and on weekends. Confirm your slots as soon as you book the stay.

  2. 02

    Safari rules

Mobile phones are not allowed during safaris in Karnataka's tiger reserves according to a notice on the Jungle Lodges website. Carry a camera, and confirm current rules when booking.

  3. 03

    Dress

Wear muted colours such as olive, brown or grey, with a warm layer for early mornings. Avoid bright whites and loud prints in the forest.

  4. 04

    Night driving

Vehicle movement on the highways through the reserve is restricted at night. Plan arrivals and departures in daylight.

  5. 05

    Stay in your vehicle

Visitors must not get out of vehicles or feed animals along the highway, even in daytime. Elephants can be close to the road.

  6. 06

    Cash and signal

Mobile networks and card machines can be patchy near the reserve. Carry some cash for tips, snacks and incidentals.

  7. 07

    Temple hill rules

Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta has fixed visiting hours and no overnight stay. Take only permitted offerings in non-plastic bags and follow the forest staff.

  8. 08

    Medicines and health

Hospitals are far from the lodges. Carry personal medicines, rehydration salts and an insect repellent.

Bandipur with elderly parents: what to know

  • Book a lodge inside or very close to the reserve so the early safari does not mean a 4 am drive on forest roads.
  • Choose the bus safari if you want a fixed, shorter outing, and a jeep slot if you want a smaller group and a slower pace. Seats on both can sell out in peak season.
