Before you go

Bandipur with elderly parents: what to know

  • Book a lodge inside or very close to the reserve so the early safari does not mean a 4 am drive on forest roads.
  • Choose the bus safari if you want a fixed, shorter outing, and a jeep slot if you want a smaller group and a slower pace. Seats on both can sell out in peak season.
  • Carry warm layers: early mornings can be cool even when afternoons are hot, and open vehicles are windy.
  • Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta is reached by forest-department bus, so the climb is gentle, but there are steps and queues at the temple. Go on a weekday if possible.
  • Medical facilities are limited near the reserve. Carry regular medicines, a basic kit and the number of your lodge, and know the nearest hospital before you leave.

Easiest first

Places in Bandipur sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (5)

  • Bandipur Forest Department Bus Safari (Places to visit · About 2–3 hours) — You sit throughout, with only a step up into the bus, so it suits most older travellers. Seats are shared and tracks are bumpy, which may bother a bad back. Mornings are cold in an open bus, so dress in layers.
  • Bandipur Jeep Safari with Jungle Lodges (Places to visit · About 2 hours per slot) — You sit in a high vehicle and climb in by a step, which some older travellers find awkward. Seats are firm and tracks are bumpy. The smaller group means you can ask for a pause, which helps anyone who tires quickly.
  • Gundlupet Flower Fields (Places to visit · 30–60 minutes) — You can look from the car or walk a short way along the field edges. There is no seating or shade, and the fields are uneven, so older travellers may prefer to stay at the road.
  • Mudumalai Tiger Reserve and Theppakadu Elephant Camp (Places to visit · Half a day) — Mostly seated or short walks at the camp. Roads are narrow and winding, and the border crossing adds waiting time. Mornings can be cool.
  • The Mysuru–Ooty Road Through Bandipur (Places to visit · 30–60 minutes at a slow pace) — You stay in the car, so it is easy for any traveller. Roads are narrow and the forest section has speed limits and checkpoints, so expect delays if elephants are crossing.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta (Places of worship · 1.5–2.5 hours including the bus) — The bus removes the climb, but there are steps at the temple and queues on busy days. Rails and seating are limited. Mist and wind can feel cold at the top.

Practical tips for Bandipur

  • Book early in season. Safari seats, especially jeeps, fill up from October to May and on weekends. Confirm your slots as soon as you book the stay.
  • Safari rules. Mobile phones are not allowed during safaris in Karnataka's tiger reserves according to a notice on the Jungle Lodges website. Carry a camera, and confirm current rules when booking.
  • Dress. Wear muted colours such as olive, brown or grey, with a warm layer for early mornings. Avoid bright whites and loud prints in the forest.
  • Night driving. Vehicle movement on the highways through the reserve is restricted at night. Plan arrivals and departures in daylight.
  • Stay in your vehicle. Visitors must not get out of vehicles or feed animals along the highway, even in daytime. Elephants can be close to the road.
  • Cash and signal. Mobile networks and card machines can be patchy near the reserve. Carry some cash for tips, snacks and incidentals.
  • Temple hill rules. Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta has fixed visiting hours and no overnight stay. Take only permitted offerings in non-plastic bags and follow the forest staff.
  • Medicines and health. Hospitals are far from the lodges. Carry personal medicines, rehydration salts and an insect repellent.
