The short answer
Kawah Putih: what visitors should know first
Yes, if you can spare a full day and like landscapes. Go on a weekday morning, expect cool air and a sulphur smell, and think twice if you have breathing difficulties.
History and context
The story behind Kawah Putih
Wikipedia says German botanist Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn is said to have been the first to document the lake in the Western world, in 1837. A sulphur mine and plant operated under Dutch rule, were later taken over by the Japanese military in the Second World War, and have since closed. The site opened to visitors in 1987, and the state forestry firm Perhutani began developing it for tourism in 1991.

Why it matters
Why Kawah Putih is worth your time
Kawah Putih is the most photographed crater in West Java, and its pale water and bleached rocks are unlike the plains below. Wikipedia describes the lake as sitting at 2,430 metres and notes that the volcanic system has been relatively stable, with no record of significant activity since around 1600.
The site is also a window into colonial and wartime history, since a sulphur mine operated here under Dutch rule and was later taken over by the Japanese military in the Second World War. A day here combines landscape, tea country and a long drive, so it suits families who enjoy the outdoors more than museums.

How to experience it
From Bandung the journey to Kawah Putih takes about two hours depending on traffic, according to Wikipedia. Visitors park at the entrance and take shuttle buses up to the crater. Facilities include toilets and vendors selling food and souvenirs.
At the lake, walk along the viewing paths and look at the water, which Wikipedia says is highly acidic and changes between blue, whitish green and brown depending on sulphur concentration and temperature. The surrounding sand and rocks are bleached white. Steam and sulphurous gas give the area a strong smell, and old mine tunnels remain visible.
Go early in the day and on a weekday, since weekends and holidays draw large crowds. Carry a light jacket, because temperatures are often around 10 degrees Celsius.
