The short answer

Raan Jay Fai: what visitors should know first

Go only if you are happy to pay a premium and plan ahead. It is an open-air room, prices are far above a typical Bangkok meal, and reservations are now needed, so check current terms and price listings before you commit.

History and context

The story behind Raan Jay Fai

Wikipedia says Supinya Junsuta, known as Jay Fai, was born around 1945 to Chinese immigrant parents who sold chicken noodles. A fire in her thirties led her into cooking, and she opened the restaurant in the 1980s serving congee and noodle dishes before expanding into seafood.

She received one Michelin star in the first Bangkok guide, announced in December 2017 for the 2018 edition. In 2024 she denied plans to retire and close the restaurant.

Why it matters

Why Raan Jay Fai is worth your time

Jay Fai is one of the few Bangkok street-style restaurants to hold a Michelin star, and it changed how international travellers think about the city's open-air kitchens. Eating here is as much about watching the charcoal wok technique as about the plate.

It also needs honesty: prices are high, there has been public discussion of billing, and the room is basic. It is a good choice for a special meal for confident travellers, but not an everyday family lunch.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Wikipedia describes the restaurant as open-air, with green tiled walls, simple tables and stools, and a cook who works at the side of the shop over two charcoal braziers wearing ski goggles. The best-known dish is the crab-meat omelette, which Wikipedia says costs over 1,000 baht. Other dishes it names are rat na and seafood phat khi mao, and a Netflix documentary series on street cooks featured her tom yum and dry tom yum.

Because the menu is built around seafood, it does not suit vegetarians, and guests with shellfish allergies should skip it. Share dishes rather than ordering one each, since the prices are high for Bangkok. Ask for the price of each dish at the time of ordering and keep the bill in view, given the 2025 dispute over a crab omelette's price that Wikipedia reports.

It is on the same road as Thipsamai, so some visitors combine the two. For a long day, book the earlier slot so the evening heat and crowd are lighter.

Plan with confidence

Small checks that make a better meal.
