Plan 01

1 day in Banswara

  1. 01

Day 1: Temple, dam and a cave shrine

Start at the Tripura Sundari temple at Umrai near Talwara in the morning, when it is quiet and cool. Return towards town and continue to the Mahi Bajaj Sagar dam, about 16 km from the town, for views over the reservoir. Have lunch in Banswara and rest through the early afternoon. In the late afternoon, drive to the Madareshwar cave temple on the eastern hill, climbing only as far as you are comfortable, and finish with a slow walk by Anand Sagar Lake at dusk.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Tripura Sundari Temple1 to 1.5 hoursEasyEarly morning on a weekday; October to March for comfort
Mahi Bajaj Sagar Dam1.5 to 2 hoursEasyLate afternoon; July to November when the reservoir is full
Madareshwar Cave TempleAbout 1 hourModerateLate afternoon; Maha Shivaratri for the busiest atmosphere
Anand Sagar Lake45 minutes to 1 hourEasySunset; October to March

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Madareshwar Cave Temple: The approach is a hill climb with steps, and the cave ceiling is low, so taller visitors need to duck. Take it slowly, rest on the way and consider skipping the final stretch if energy is short.

Plan 02

2 days in Banswara

  1. 01

    Day 1: Town sights

Begin at Anand Sagar Lake while the light is soft and the lakeside is quiet. Drive out to the Tripura Sundari temple before the day warms up, then return for lunch and a rest. In the afternoon visit the Mahi Bajaj Sagar dam and, in the monsoon months, the swollen reservoir. Watch sunset from near the Madareshwar hill if you have the energy for the steps.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Anand Sagar Lake45 minutes to 1 hourEasySunset; October to March
Tripura Sundari Temple1 to 1.5 hoursEasyEarly morning on a weekday; October to March for comfort
Mahi Bajaj Sagar Dam1.5 to 2 hoursEasyLate afternoon; July to November when the reservoir is full

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

  2. 02

Day 2: Arthuna and the Paramara temples

Leave early for Arthuna, in Garhi tehsil to the south-west of town; confirm the driving time with your driver, as sources give it as roughly an hour or more. Spend a morning among the 11th-century Shiva temples and the stepped kund. Return for a late lunch, and keep the evening free.

Plan 03

3 days in Banswara

  1. 01

Day 1: Water and a Shakti shrine

Morning at the Tripura Sundari temple, then the Mahi Bajaj Sagar dam and reservoir viewpoints. Rest after lunch and spend the evening at Anand Sagar Lake.

Mahi Bajaj Sagar Dam1.5 to 2 hoursEasyLate afternoon; July to November when the reservoir is full
Anand Sagar Lake45 minutes to 1 hourEasySunset; October to March

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Arthuna and Andheshwar

Spend the morning at Arthuna among the Paramara-era temples. On the way back or on a separate half day, visit the Andheshwar Parshwanath Jain temple on its hillock in Kushalgarh tehsil, checking the route and timing with your driver first.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Andheshwar ParshwanathAbout 1 hour on site; half a day with the driveModerateMorning, October to March

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Andheshwar Parshwanath: The temple stands on a hillock with steps and uneven ground, and the trip involves a long rural drive. Go slowly, carry water and ask local trustees what assistance is available.

  3. 03

Day 3: Mangarh and the cave shrine

Make a long day trip to Mangarh Dham, in the western part of the district near the Gujarat border, to see the memorial to Govind Guru and the 1913 gathering. Take a driver who knows the route and carry water and snacks. If time remains on the way back, finish with the Madareshwar cave temple at sunset.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Mangarh DhamMost of a day including the drive; 1 to 1.5 hours on siteModerateOctober to March; the memorial gathering is held in November
Madareshwar Cave TempleAbout 1 hourModerateLate afternoon; Maha Shivaratri for the busiest atmosphere

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Mangarh Dham: The journey is long and the site involves some walking and exposure to sun and wind on an open hill. Confirm facilities, road conditions and distances locally; older travellers may prefer to break the trip.

With parents at Madareshwar Cave Temple: The approach is a hill climb with steps, and the cave ceiling is low, so taller visitors need to duck. Take it slowly, rest on the way and consider skipping the final stretch if energy is short.

Pacing

Pacing a Banswara trip for parents and children

  • Hire a car and driver for the whole trip. Distances between sights are long, public transport is thin and a vehicle gives you a place to rest.
  • Plan one major outing a day and rest after lunch, especially from March to June when afternoons are very hot.
  • Tripura Sundari, the dam viewpoints and Anand Sagar Lake are the easiest sights. Madareshwar and Andheshwar involve a hill climb or uneven steps, so go only as far as you are comfortable.
  • Arthuna is an open ruin with rough ground and little shade. Go early with a hat and water, and wear closed shoes.
  • In the monsoon, hill paths and village roads can be slippery or washed out. Check conditions locally before a long drive.
  • Carry medicines, water and snacks; medical facilities are in town and thin on rural roads.
