Basohli travel guide

A small Ravi-bank hill town of ruined palaces, a famous painting school and a very quiet pace.

Basohli sits on the right bank of the Ravi in the Shivalik hills of Kathua district. It was a hill capital for the Basohli rajas, founded around 1635, and it gave its name to the first school of Pahari miniature painting. The palaces are now ruins, but the painting tradition survives in a few family studios, and the town earned a GI tag for its paintings in 2023.

The visit is small and slow. Spend a morning at the ruined fort-palace and the Neelkantha Mahadev temple, an hour with a painter, and an afternoon along the Ranjit Sagar reservoir. Nothing is polished. Expect quiet lanes, basic eateries and a town that rewards patience.

Basohli is best for travellers who like art, history and unhurried places, and who are happy to drive. It is roughly 160 km from Jammu, mostly by a good highway to Kathua and then uphill. Services are limited, so plan transport and meals ahead.

What and where to eat in Basohli.

Food to try in Basohli

Food and restaurants

Food in Basohli is simple, Dogra-influenced home cooking: rice with rajma, dal, kadhi, local breads and tea in small eateries around the main chowk. There are few named restaurants worth planning around, so ask your guesthouse for a clean place. Carry snacks on day trips, drink bottled water and eat at busy stalls. Dogra festival sweets are sometimes available in the season.

Shopping in Basohli

Shopping

Two crafts are worth knowing here. Basohli paintings, buyable from working painters, hold a GI tag from 2023. Basohli pashmina shawls and mufflers also hold a GI tag, but ask sellers about the wool and where the piece was woven before paying a premium. Prices are not published, so agree them in advance and ask for the artist's or weaver's name. Everyday shops in the chowk sell fabric, dry fruit and basics.

One District One Product

Basohli painting

Basohli painting, the first school of Pahari miniature art, received a Geographical Indication tag in 2023. Buy from working painters in the town and ask for the artist's name. Basohli pashmina products also hold a GI tag.

Choose without overthinking

Which Basohli experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Fort ruins or painter's studio, if you have a morning?

Choose the studio if you want something alive and buyable. Choose the ruins if you want the setting and the history. Together they take about half a day.

Ranjit Sagar or Dhar Mahanpur for a day out?

Ranjit Sagar is closer and about water and views. Dhar Mahanpur is further and cooler, with forest and ridge scenery.

Basohli painting or Basohli pashmina as a souvenir?

A small painting is lighter and carries the town's identity. A pashmina is more useful in winter, but ask about the wool and weaving.
