Before you go

Basohli with elderly parents: what to know

  • Hire a car; the town's lanes and the palace ruins are uphill and uneven.
  • Plan a rest after the palace visit; there is little seating on site.
  • Carry water, a hat and any medicines, as services are thin.
  • Avoid summer afternoons, when the Shivalik hills are hot.
  • Keep photo ID with you, as checks can occur on roads in border districts.
  • Ask for studio visits to be arranged ahead so you are not walking around in search of one.

Easiest first

Places in Basohli sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (4)

  • Basohli Painting (Culture and craft · 1 to 2 hours) — Studio visits are indoors and mostly at street level, with seating usually available. Narrow lanes in the old town can be steep, so arrange a car to the door.
  • Chamunda Devi Temple, Basohli (Places of worship · 20 to 30 minutes) — The temple is in the town centre and close to vehicle access, with only a few steps to climb. There is little seating, so keep the visit short.
  • Neelkantha Mahadev Shivalaya (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — The temple is close to the town lanes and level inside the compound, though there are steps at the entrance. Floors are cool, so wear socks in winter.
  • Ranjit Sagar Reservoir (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — Viewpoints are reached by car with short walks on rough ground. There is little shade or seating, so carry water and a hat.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Basohli Fort and Palace (Places to visit · 30 to 60 minutes) — Expect an uphill approach on uneven ground and fallen masonry, with no handrails or seating. Older travellers can view the site from the lower lanes and skip the climb.

Practical tips for Basohli

  • Heat. Summers are hot in the lower hills. Visit between October and March, and in summer go early in the day.
  • Getting there. Basohli is about 160 km from Jammu; the road is a highway to Kathua and then uphill. Allow most of a day if arriving by train.
  • Walking. The palace ruins and old lanes involve uneven ground and slopes. Wear shoes with grip.
  • Money. Carry cash; ATMs are limited and card acceptance is patchy.
  • Dress. Dress modestly at temples and remove shoes.
  • Photography. Avoid photographing dam works and security installations.
  • Shopping for crafts. Ask painters and weavers for their names and the materials used; both Basohli painting and Basohli pashmina have GI tags.
  • Services. Services thin out quickly outside the main chowk. Carry water and snacks.
