Bathinda sits in the Malwa region of southwestern Punjab, about 227 km west of Chandigarh, and is the fifth-largest city in the state. Its modern reputation rests on railways, power plants and a cantonment, but its centre holds Qila Mubarak, a brick fortress that has changed hands between Ghaznavids, Delhi sultans, Mughals and Patiala's rulers.
For most visitors the draw is Sikh heritage. Takht Sri Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo, about 28 km away, is one of the five takhts, and the fort carries a gurdwara linked to Guru Gobind Singh's 1705 visit. A half-day each for the fort and the takht makes a calm, meaningful trip.
The rest of the city is modest and local: the Rose Garden, a small zoo at Bir Talab and the lakes that give Bathinda the nickname City of Lakes. These are short outings, best in the cooler months, and suit families and older travellers who prefer level walks.
Plan for heat from April to September and for fog in winter mornings. Two days is ample; many travellers pass through on the way to Talwandi Sabo or Rajasthan.
