Why it matters

Why Bir Talab Zoo and Deer Safari is worth your time

The zoo gives the city a family outing with wildlife, and for travellers it is also a chance to see blackbuck, an animal once common on the Punjab plains. The site was established in the late 1970s inside the Bir Talab block forest, so it adds a green stop to a city otherwise known for industry.

It is small, and recognised as a small zoo under the Central Zoo Authority at last report, so it suits a gentle visit rather than a major excursion.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Go in the morning when animals are most active. Follow the main loop through the deer areas and the bird enclosures, and look for blackbuck, Punjab's state animal. There is a deer safari section as part of the complex.

The trees on the site, including shisham, give welcome shade, but the walk is still outdoors and summer is uncomfortable. Children's riding and picnic lawns are listed for the nearby Chetak Park and Bir Talab area.

Treat it as a short family outing rather than a full day, and combine it with the Rose Garden or lake in the evening.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
