Begusarai is best known as an industrial town. The Barauni refinery and related plants have earned it the nickname Industrial Capital of Bihar, and it sits on the northern bank of the Ganga in the Mithila region, with Patna to the west and Munger to the southeast. It is not a polished tourist centre, and the pleasure of a visit lies in a few specific places set among flat farmland and river plains.
The main reason to come is Kanwar Lake, also called Kabar Taal or Kabartal, an oxbow wetland that was made a bird sanctuary in 1987 and listed as Bihar's first Ramsar site in 2020. Winter brings migratory waterbirds. On a raised island in the same lake country stands Jaimangla Garh, a goddess temple that draws crowds at Navratri.
The second thread is the river. Simaria Ghat on the Ganga hosts the Kalpavas fair in Kartik, and Simaria is the birthplace of the Hindi poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar. The Rajendra Setu, opened in 1959, links the district to south Bihar. In town, Naulakha Mandir, completed in 1953, is a short and easy stop.
Treat Begusarai as a one- or two-day trip from Patna or as a stop on a longer Bihar route. Visit between November and February, hire a car with a driver, and keep expectations modest on facilities. Roads, food options and accommodation are basic, and the area rewards unhurried mornings more than a tight schedule.
