Before you go

Begusarai with elderly parents: what to know

  • Visit between November and February; avoid the hot months and the monsoon.
  • Hire a car with a driver and agree the day plan beforehand, as public transport to the lake is limited.
  • Carry water, snacks and a hat, since shade and toilets are scarce at the lake and ghat.
  • Choose ordinary weekdays for Jaimangla Garh and Simaria Ghat to avoid Navratri and Kartik crowds.
  • Take extra care on riverbank steps and bunds; surfaces can be slippery or uneven.

Easiest first

Places in Begusarai sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (4)

  • Jaimangla Garh Temple (Places of worship · 1 to 2 hours, more if paired with the lake) — The approach is mostly level, but the compound is open to sun, floors can be hot and crowded on festival days, and queues for darshan can be long. Go on an ordinary weekday morning if mobility is limited.
  • Kanwar Lake Bird Sanctuary (Kabartal) (Places to visit · Half a day, longer if you hire a boat or want serious birding) — Mostly level ground and short walks along embankments and village tracks, but little shade, few toilets and no organised seating. Roads in the last stretch can be rough, so carry water and keep the schedule loose in hot weather.
  • Naulakha Mandir, Begusarai (Places of worship · 45 to 90 minutes) — Largely level with a short walk from the road. Stone floors can be hot at midday and steps lead into the main temple, so go in the cooler hours.
  • Rajendra Setu (Places to visit · 30 to 60 minutes as part of a Simaria Ghat visit) — Viewing from the bank near Simaria Ghat involves uneven ground and some steps, with no seating or shade. Viewing from a parked car at a safe spot is the easiest option.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Simaria Ghat (Places of worship · 1 to 2 hours; a full morning during the Kartik fair) — Steps and river-edge ground can be uneven or slippery, and crowds in Kartik are heavy. Choose an off-fair morning and keep to the upper landing if mobility is limited.

Small decisions

Practical tips for Begusarai

  • Season. Plan between November and February. Summer reaches the high 30s Celsius and the monsoon floods low roads.
  • Getting around. Hire a car with a driver for lake and ghat trips; the last stretches can be rough.
  • Facilities. Toilets, shade and food stalls are scarce at the lake and ghat, so carry water and snacks.
  • Money. Carry some cash; card acceptance is patchy outside town.
  • Dress. Dress modestly at temples and ghats, and remove footwear at shrines.
  • Festival crowds. Navratri at Jaimangla Garh and Kartik at Simaria Ghat bring large crowds; choose ordinary weekdays for calm.
  • Photography. Ask before photographing worshippers and bathers; avoid pointing cameras at industrial sites such as the refinery.
