The short answer
Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first
Go only if you want a quiet forest day and are willing to arrange it. Facilities are minimal, access depends on the forest department and monsoon restrictions apply, so confirm entry in Khanapur or Belagavi first.
History and context
The story behind Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary
Bhimgad was declared a wildlife sanctuary in December 2011. It covers around 190 sq km in Khanapur taluk and forms part of the Western Ghats corridor towards Goa. A 17th-century hill fort associated with Shivaji stands on a rock inside the forest.

Why it matters
Why Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Bhimgad lies at the headwaters of the Mhadei, Malaprabha and Tillari rivers, which makes its forests important for water as well as wildlife. Protection came late, after a long campaign, when it was notified as a sanctuary in December 2011.
It is also a rare haven near a city. Few places this close to a large town hold tigers, elephants and a globally rare bat. Responsible visits, with a guide and respect for rules, help keep the case for protection alive.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan Bhimgad as a full day by car. The road from Belagavi leads through Khanapur and on to Jamboti, with the sanctuary beginning in the forests of the Western Ghats around 800 metres. Ask the forest office whether any trails or viewpoints are open and whether a guide is required.
The forest is moist broadleaf with grassland, and the wildlife reported for the sanctuary includes tiger, leopard, gaur, sloth bear, sambar, dhole and elephant. Sightings are not guaranteed and animals are usually shy, so go for the atmosphere and birds rather than an expected sighting.
The Barapede caves are the only known breeding site of the critically endangered Wroughton's free-tailed bat, and are not open for casual visiting. Do not enter restricted areas, and note that authorities have restricted visits to forest waterfalls during heavy monsoon flows.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Contact the Khanapur or Belagavi forest office first
