The short answer

Kittur Fort: what visitors should know first

Yes, for history. It is about 50 km from Belagavi and takes a half-day by car. Do not expect grand architecture: the palace is in ruins, and the story and the museum are the point. Confirm timings locally.

History and context

The story behind Kittur Fort

Allappa Gowda Sardesai, who ruled from 1650 to 1681, built the fort. Kittur was the capital of a small principality that flourished under Mallasarja Desai.

In 1824, during a disputed succession, the Dharwad commissioner St John Thackeray was killed approaching the fort. Chennamma was later captured and died in Bailhongal jail. The museum, run by the Karnataka archaeology department, was opened in 1967.

Why it matters

Why Kittur Fort is worth your time

Kittur matters because it is one of the earliest armed challenges to British rule in the Deccan, decades before 1857. Rani Chennamma is remembered across Karnataka, and her statue and name appear all over the state.

The fort was the seat of the Desai dynasty, built in the 17th century by Allappa Gowda Sardesai. Today it is a ruin, but the museum and the surviving temples help visitors understand the principality at its peak under Mallasarja Desai. For travellers in Belagavi, it is the most meaningful half-day beyond the city.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Reach Kittur by road from Belagavi in about an hour and a half, depending on traffic. Start with the museum, which holds weapons, a mail coat, a shield, carved palace doors and windows, inscriptions and sculptures, then walk through the fort grounds to see what remains of the palace.

Stand where the main gate once was and read the story: Rani Chennamma succeeded to the throne in 1816 and in 1824 led resistance against the East India Company, a dispute over succession that ended with her capture. Her general Sangolli Rayanna kept up the fight until he was hanged in 1831.

The temples at Kittur, including Maruti, Kalmeshwara, Dyamavva and Basavanna, are small but can add to a short visit. If you go during the Kittur Utsav in October, expect crowds and processions.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
