Benaulim Beach travel guide

A wide, quiet fishing beach in South Goa, a short drive south of Colva: slow, green and easy for families and older travellers.

Benaulim is the quieter neighbour of Colva. The beach lies just under 2 km south of the Colva stretch, in Salcete taluka, and it still works as a fishing beach: boats are pulled up on the sand, and in the hot months local families dry salted fish in the open air. Behind it the village is a spread of coconut palms, paddy fields, small churches and family-run guesthouses, with a main market (the tinto) where most of the village's restaurants, shops and chemists cluster.

The feel is village rather than resort. Weekday mornings are calm, with plenty of room on the sand. Evenings and weekends are busier, when day visitors arrive from other parts of Goa. Shacks and open-air restaurants line the sand and the beach road, and the sunsets draw people down at the end of the day. Benaulim is also known as Goa's village of carpenters, and it is the birthplace of St Joseph Vaz, the missionary priest canonised in 2015.

Treat the sea with respect. State-appointed lifeguards patrol Goa's main beaches, red flags mean stay out, and swimming, coastal water sports and fishing are prohibited during the monsoon, roughly June to August or longer. Water sports operate in the dry season in a zone set apart from the swimming area. Beach shacks are licensed seasonally, roughly October to May, and can change hands, so check that the place you want is open.

As a base, Benaulim suits slow stays of three to five nights. Hotels range from a large luxury resort at the Calwaddo end to small family-run resorts on the beach road, and the walking is flat. Colva, Varca and Margao are short drives away, so it works well for people who want a quiet beach with a few easy outings.

Food to try in Benaulim Beach

Food and restaurants · 5 guides

Benaulim's beach food is mostly Goan seafood served at shacks and open-air restaurants: prawn curry with rice, rava-fried fish, recheado masala fry, calamari and crab, with the catch and the price depending on the day. A few places have fed visitors for decades, notably Pedro's, which dates to the hippie era. Jamny's shack on Velludo beach keeps an old-fashioned layout, and the Southern Deck offers a more modern bistro menu with cocktails.

Beach shacks are licensed seasonally, roughly October to May, and can change hands, so check a place is open. Prices of seafood sold by weight should be asked before you order. For breakfast and coffee, Hari's German Bakery on the beach road is a small café with cakes and pastries. Many restaurants close one day a week or in the quiet months, so ask your hotel before you walk down.

Shopping in Benaulim Beach

Shopping · 1 guide

Benaulim's own shopping is simple. The main market near the village centre, the tinto, is the place for fruit, vegetables, bread, groceries and everyday needs, and most of the village's restaurants and chemists cluster around it. Stalls along the beach road sell sarongs, shell crafts and souvenirs, and prices are negotiable.

Benaulim is known for traditional carpentry, and its workshops make beds, chairs and cupboards, often sold at village fairs and zatras rather than at beachfront shops. For a bigger market, Margao is a short drive away. Cashews, Goan spice mixes, bebinca and feni are the usual things to carry home; buy packaged goods with a visible seal.

Choose without overthinking

Which Benaulim Beach experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Benaulim or Colva for a beach stay?

Benaulim is quieter and more village-like, with fishing boats and fewer hawkers. Colva has more hotels, shops and activity within walking distance. Choose Benaulim for rest and Colva if you want things to do.

The Taj Exotica resort or a small beach-road hotel?

The luxury resort has large grounds, pools and its own beach frontage, which suits those who want everything on site. A small hotel such as Carina Beach Resort is simpler and closer to the village restaurants, with a pool.

A beach shack or a bistro for dinner?

Shacks such as Jamny's give you the sea and Goan home cooking in a simple setting. The Southern Deck offers a wider menu, cocktails and sometimes live music, but costs more and can be noisy on weekends.

Water sports or a quiet beach day?

Water sports run only in the dry season, in a zone set apart from the swimming area, and need a registered operator and life jacket. If you or your parents prefer calm, a morning walk, a long lunch and a sunset gives a slower day.

Know before you go

Benaulim Beach travel tips

  1. 01

    Swimming

Lifeguards patrol major Goa beaches in season. Swim only in the marked area, obey red flags and keep children close. In the monsoon, sea swimming, coastal water sports and fishing are prohibited.

  2. 02

    Heat and sun

Even in winter the midday sun is strong and the humidity high. Use a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water, and keep the middle of the day for a rest.

  3. 03

    Getting around

The beach road is walkable; for Margao, Colva and Varca use a taxi, auto or hired car. Agree the fare before starting, or use a booking app.

  4. 04

    Shacks and seasons

Shacks are licensed seasonally, roughly October to May, and can change hands. Check that the place you want is open, and ask the price of seafood sold by weight before ordering.

  5. 05

    Money

Carry some cash for stalls, autos and shacks, since not everyone accepts cards or UPI reliably. Keep small notes.

  6. 06

    Dress and churches

Beachwear is fine on the sand, but cover shoulders and knees for the church and Margao.

  7. 07

    Crowds

Weekend evenings, Christmas to New Year and school holidays bring more people. Weekday mornings are calm. Book rooms well ahead at peak times.

  8. 08

    Photography

Ask before photographing people, especially fishermen and families drying fish. Keep valuables out of sight on the sand.

Benaulim Beach with elderly parents: what to know

  • Walk on firm wet sand near the waterline rather than soft dry sand, and ask your hotel about sun-lounger access.
  • Plan beach time before about 10 am and after about 4 pm; the middle of the day is hot and humid even in winter.
