Before you go
Benaulim Beach with elderly parents: what to know
- Walk on firm wet sand near the waterline rather than soft dry sand, and ask your hotel about sun-lounger access.
- Plan beach time before about 10 am and after about 4 pm; the middle of the day is hot and humid even in winter.
- Choose a hotel within a short, level walk of the beach and ask about ground-floor rooms or a lift.
- Never swim beyond the lifeguard-marked area, obey red flags, and do not enter the sea in the monsoon.
- Use taxis or autos for Margao and Colva and agree the fare first; a hired car with a driver is easiest for day trips.
- Check that a shack is open and has seating with a back rest; many are plastic chairs on sand.
Easiest first
Places in Benaulim Beach sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (6)
- Benaulim Market (Shopping · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The market is level but can be crowded with scooters and narrow lanes. Go in the morning, wear sun protection and avoid peak midday traffic. Seating is limited, so take a break at a nearby café.
- Hari's German Bakery (Food and restaurants · 30 to 45 minutes) — A small café with indoor and outdoor seats on the beach road, mostly level. It is easy for older travellers, but it can fill at breakfast, so go early for a quiet table.
- Jamny's (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The shack is on sand, so walking is slower, and seating is simple. Ask for a chair with arms or a back rest, and go at a cool time of day. There is a modern washroom, according to a local press report.
- Johncy's Restaurant & Bar (Food and restaurants · 1.5 to 2 hours) — Tables are set on sand close to the waves, which is pleasant but uneven for walkers. Ask for a table near the entrance or on firmer ground. Evenings are busier and can be loud.
- Pedro's (Food and restaurants · 1.5 to 2 hours) — Mostly level ground with proper tables and chairs, which suits older diners better than soft sand. Weekend evenings are busier and louder, so a weekday lunch is calmer. Ask about steps and a table near the entrance.
- The Southern Deck (Food and restaurants · 1.5 to 2 hours) — Seating is a raised deck, which is easier than sand, but check for steps at the entrance. It is loud and crowded at weekends, so a weekday lunch is calmer for older diners.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Church of St John the Baptist, Benaulim (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — The church sits on higher ground, so there is a short climb or ramp from the road, which can be tiring in heat. Go in the morning, wear a hat outside and ask whether a car can go close.
- Water Sports on Benaulim Beach (Sports · 30 to 60 minutes) — Boarding boats and jet-skis means stepping through surf and onto wet sand, which is tiring for older travellers. Parasailing and fast rides are not suitable for people with heart, back or balance problems. Boat rides are the gentler option.

Practical tips for Benaulim Beach
- Swimming. Lifeguards patrol major Goa beaches in season. Swim only in the marked area, obey red flags and keep children close. In the monsoon, sea swimming, coastal water sports and fishing are prohibited.
- Heat and sun. Even in winter the midday sun is strong and the humidity high. Use a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water, and keep the middle of the day for a rest.
- Getting around. The beach road is walkable; for Margao, Colva and Varca use a taxi, auto or hired car. Agree the fare before starting, or use a booking app.
- Shacks and seasons. Shacks are licensed seasonally, roughly October to May, and can change hands. Check that the place you want is open, and ask the price of seafood sold by weight before ordering.
- Money. Carry some cash for stalls, autos and shacks, since not everyone accepts cards or UPI reliably. Keep small notes.
- Dress and churches. Beachwear is fine on the sand, but cover shoulders and knees for the church and Margao.
- Crowds. Weekend evenings, Christmas to New Year and school holidays bring more people. Weekday mornings are calm. Book rooms well ahead at peak times.
- Photography. Ask before photographing people, especially fishermen and families drying fish. Keep valuables out of sight on the sand.
