Bentota is a small resort town on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, in Galle District, about 65 km south of Colombo and roughly 56 km north of Galle. It sits on the southern bank of the mouth of the Bentota Ganga (river), so the town has two waters side by side: a long, open beach on the Indian Ocean and a calm estuary behind it. Most visitors come for exactly that mix, with hotels, Ayurveda spas and watersports spread along the shore.
The town is not a heritage city and does not try to be. What it offers is a base. Within a short drive you can reach Lunuganga, the lakeside country estate of the architect Geoffrey Bawa, and Brief Garden, the garden made by his brother Bevis Bawa. Kande Vihara, a hill temple with a seated Buddha statue about 48.8 m tall, is just across the river near Aluthgama, and the Kosgoda turtle hatchery lies to the south. The old temple of Galapatha, with medieval stone inscriptions, is in Bentota itself.
The weather decides the trip. The dry season runs roughly from December to March, when the sea is calmer and days are bright. From April to November rain is heavier, and October is the wettest month on the nearest climate table, which is for Galle. In the monsoon the surf can be rough and swimming is often unsafe, though gardens, temples and the river still make for a pleasant day.
For Indian families and older travellers, Bentota is easy rather than exciting. The hotels are used to foreign guests, the beach road is flat, and distances between sights are short. The honest caveats are food and swimming. Fully vegetarian restaurants are rare, and I could not confirm any pure-veg, Jain or vegan restaurant that is open, so none are listed here. Plan on rice-and-curry meals with vegetable dishes, or on hotel kitchens that cook to request.
Think of Bentota as a two to three night beach stop between Colombo and Galle, with one or two sightseeing mornings, not as a destination to cover in a rush.
