Area by area

Bentota neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Bentota beach strip

Best for: Resort stays, families, short breaks

Good to know: Hotels and resorts line the sea side of the main road, with beach access and pools. Rooms near the river mouth are quieter, and swimming depends on the sea state, so check the flags in the monsoon.

  2. 02

    Bentota river side

Best for: Quiet stays, birdwatching and estuary views

Good to know: Guesthouses and small hotels face the river or lagoon. Calmer water and no surf, but fewer beachside facilities and you will need a tuk-tuk for the sea.

  3. 03

    Aluthgama

Best for: Rail travel and shops

Good to know: A town on the north bank of the river, with the main railway stop, banks and shops. Handy for Kande Vihara, and about 2.5 km from Bentota Halt, but busier and less scenic.

Sights in this area: Bentota River Estuary, Brief Garden, Kande Vihara

  4. 04

    Beruwala and Induruwa

Best for: A change of beach, Ayurveda resorts and turtle visits

Good to know: Beruwala lies to the north and Induruwa to the south of the town. Both are a short drive away and have their own resort strips; check which stretch of coast your hotel faces.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
