Go between November and February if you like birds and quiet water: the lake is the point, not big mammals. Allow half a day from Bettiah, bring binoculars and water, and confirm access with the Champaran forest division office, which is based in Bettiah.

Why it matters

Why Udaypur Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

This is one of Bihar's few designated wetlands, a stretch of the old Gandak floodplain where an abandoned river channel has become a lake. About 319 hectares of the sanctuary is wetland, which is rare in a district better known for sugar cane and forest.\n\nIts importance is for birds. Resident and migratory waterbirds use it for feeding and resting through winter, and its Ramsar listing recognises it internationally. For a traveller in Bettiah, it is the easiest nature stop, close enough to town to see in a morning and quiet enough to remind you why wetlands matter.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The oxbow lake

A former river channel of the Gandak forms a broad wetland at the sanctuary's centre.

  2. 02

    Winter waterbirds

Resident and migratory birds use the lake through the cooler months.

  3. 03

    Swamp and riverine forest

The shore is lined with swamp forest and dry riverine forest.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Go early, when light on the water is soft and birds are most active. Start with the lake edge, where the oxbow is bordered by swamp forest and dry riverine forest, and walk slowly along the paths with binoculars. Waterbirds, both resident and migratory, gather here in the cooler months, and the still morning air carries sound far.\n\nThe sanctuary is managed by the Champaran Forest Division, whose office is in Bettiah, so that is the place to ask about entry, guides and the rest house. Do not assume you can wander the whole wetland. Stay on paths that staff approve, keep your distance from nesting birds and do not play music or use drones.\n\nBring everything you need. There are few facilities and little shade, and the trip is short enough to combine with a Bettiah lunch before or after. In the monsoon the floodplain is wet and access can be difficult, so winter is the sensible time.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm access at the forest division office in Bettiah
  • Go at dawn in winter for the best light and birds
  • Carry water, binoculars and sun protection; services are limited
  • Keep to approved paths and do not disturb nesting birds
