Bettiah is the headquarters of West Champaran district, in the far north-west of Bihar close to the Nepal border and about 225 km north-west of Patna. At roughly 65 m above sea level it sits on the Gandak plain, in a district better known for sugar cane, forests and the Champaran movement than for tourism.
The town grew around the Bettiah Raj, which by 1765 was the largest estate under the East India Company's jurisdiction in the region. Traces survive in the old palace area and the Ghanta Ghar clock tower. The Raj also invited Capuchin friars in the 18th century, and the Catholic church and Christian Quarter remain central to one of northern India's oldest Christian communities.
Nature is the stronger draw. Udaypur Wildlife Sanctuary, an oxbow-lake wetland of 8.74 sq km, lies about half an hour away and is a good place for winter waterbirds. Further out, Lauriya Nandangarh has an Ashoka pillar and ancient mounds, and Valmiki Tiger Reserve, about 80 km away, is Bihar's tiger reserve.
Bettiah suits unhurried travellers who like history, birds and rural landscapes. Services are modest, so use it as a base for day trips, visit between November and February, and plan ahead for forest permissions and longer drives.
